Legendary actor has passed away at age 79

‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Mourns the Loss of Rick Hurst

Fans are mourning the passing of Rick Hurst, best known as Deputy Cletus Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard.

He died unexpectedly at age 79, just days before a scheduled appearance at Cooter’s Place, a Dukes-themed museum.

Born in Houston in 1946, Hurst earned degrees from Tulane and Temple University before launching a successful acting career.

He joined The Dukes of Hazzard in 1979, playing the lovable cousin of Boss Hogg. His character, full of humor and heart, became a fan favorite.

After stepping into a lead role in Season 3, he continued to appear in reunion specials and remained close with the cast.

Beyond Hazzard, Hurst had roles in Happy Days, Little House on the Prairie, MASH, and films like Steel Magnolias and In the Line of Fire.

Hurst is survived by his wife, Candace Kaniecki, and their son, actor Ryan Hurst, known for Sons of Anarchy and

The Walking Dead. His legacy joins those of Dukes co-stars already gone, including Denver Pyle and James Best.

Rick Hurst brought warmth and laughter to millions. As Deputy Cletus, he became part of something beloved—and unforgettable.
