Michael Douglas Announces Heartbreaking Exit from Acting After Nearly 60 Years

After almost six decades in Hollywood, Michael Douglas, 80, has revealed he is stepping away from acting — saying he doesn’t want to “drop dead on the set.” The two-time Oscar winner shared the news while attending the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, marking the end of an era for one of cinema’s most celebrated careers.

Douglas, son of the legendary Kirk Douglas, first won an Academy Award in 1976 as a producer for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest before becoming a major on-screen presence in the 1980s and ’90s with roles like Gordon Gekko in Wall Street, which earned him his second Oscar, and iconic films such as Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct.

More recently, younger audiences came to know him as Dr. Hank Pym in Marvel’s Ant-Man franchise and in the Netflix hit The Kominsky Method. His final on-screen appearance was as Benjamin Franklin in the 2024 Apple TV+ series Franklin.

“I have not worked since 2022, purposefully, because I realized I had to stop,” Douglas told Deadline. “I’ve been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I’m very happy with taking the time off. But I say I’m not retired — if something special came up, I’d go back.”Douglas also spoke candidly about his battle with stage IV cancer in 2010, saying the aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments were difficult but saved his life. “Stage 4 cancer is not a holiday,” he recalled, noting that surgery could have cost him part of his jaw and his ability to speak.

For now, Douglas says he’s happy focusing on his personal life, enjoying time with his wife, Golden Globe nominee Catherine Zeta-Jones, and watching her work. He is still set to appear in one more film, Looking Through Water, co-starring his son Cameron.
