Camel, Left Neglected in Extreme Heat, Turns Deadly and Kills Owner

In 2016, a tragic incident occurred in the Barmer district of India, where a camel reportedly killed its owner, Urjaram, after being left tied for hours in extreme heat without water or shade. The camel attacked the man violently, ultimately severing his head in a shocking and gruesome event that left the local community in disbelief. Barmer is a desert region known for its harsh climate, and on that day, temperatures had soared past 109 degrees Fahrenheit, making it unbearable for both humans and animals.

The camel had been tethered outside in the scorching sun for several hours, visibly distressed and agitated. Witnesses reported seeing the animal pacing and growling, warning signs of its growing frustration and pain. Urjaram, the owner, was inside his home entertaining guests when he suddenly remembered the camel was still tied outside. When he approached to untie the animal, the camel unexpectedly erupted in a violent rage. Eyewitnesses described how the camel grabbed Urjaram by the neck, threw him to the ground, and attacked him repeatedly with bites.

The attack was so severe that the camel severed the man’s head right in front of stunned villagers. The violence continued for hours, with the camel resisting all attempts to be restrained. It took 25 villagers nearly six hours, using ropes and a truck, to finally control the furious animal and remove it from the scene. Locals revealed that this was not the first time there had been tension between Urjaram and the camel. There had been a history of clashes, suggesting that the camel’s violent outburst was the result of ongoing mistreatment or stress.

Camels are often seen as gentle giants, known for their loyalty and ability to survive in harsh desert conditions. However, this tragedy highlights the importance of proper animal care and the dangers of neglect. Experts warn that while camels are usually docile, they can become unpredictable and dangerous when mistreated or pushed beyond their limits.

Despite their calm and slow appearance, camels are powerful animals. They can weigh up to 2,200 pounds and are equipped with strong jaws and powerful legs capable of delivering deadly kicks in all directions. A camel expert explained that a full-grown adult camel can easily crush limbs and necks by biting and kicking, often using its body weight to kneel forward and trap victims.

Camel attacks, although rare, have been reported in different parts of the world. For example, in 2023, a Bactrian camel in Siberia killed its owner after being struck in the face. In 2022, two men attempting to capture a runaway camel from a petting zoo were killed by the animal, which even tried to attack police officers afterward. Another case in Mexico involved a camel attacking a wildlife sanctuary owner, biting and kicking him severely until he was nearly asphyxiated.

These incidents serve as stark reminders that domesticated animals, no matter how gentle they seem, have breaking points. Proper care, respect, and understanding of their behavior are essential to prevent such tragedies.
