Several black voters \u2014 most of them women \u2014 openly rejected Vice President Kamala Harris in lieu of supporting former President Donald Trump during an event hosted by MSBNC.<\/p>\n
The network sent a correspondent to Philadelphia, Alex Wagner, which traditionally has been a strong Democratic hub, to get a sense of how Americans of color feel about the vice president and whether they think she\u2019s the right candidate for the country at this time.<\/p>\n
Most in the gathering said no.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the end of the day, I don\u2019t think\u2026 he has what it takes to go up against Putin \u2014 and go up against these other presidents that are built for this,\u201d one black woman claimed.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe don\u2019t understand our struggles,\u201d another black woman said. \u201cAnd for me to believe you for another four years, you\u2019re crazy. Like, you\u2019re crazy. You\u2019re saying the same things [now] that you said four years ago. That\u2019s just the bottom line.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wagner then told the assembled crowd that Trump has said Harris \u201cbecame black when it was convenient,\u201d politically, for her to do so, to which most agreed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen she was sworn into the Senate, it was as the first Indian-American,\u201d said another black woman, to which others in the room thanked her for saying.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhich is fine \u2014 we don\u2019t care!\u201d the woman continued.<\/p>\n
Another chimed in: \u201cWe all know he\u2019s not black. Let\u2019s understand that. We\u2019re all clear on that. But my point of view is\u2026she\u2019s already been there. She\u2019s in office right now.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, communications consultant Frank Luntz said this week that a campaign appearance by former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley with Trump will help the him win swing voters, claiming that the demographic \u201cwill listen to her.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTrump has said that Nikki Haley, once his nemesis in the primaries, could join him on the trail. She\u2019s done a robocall for him. She\u2019s recorded robocalls on his behalf,\u201d observed CNN anchor Brianna Keilar before asking, \u201cBut if he \u2014 if the Trump campaign deploys her, what kind of voters could that help with? And where do you think that they\u2019ll use her?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will help with younger women because Trump is doing so well among older men. It\u2019ll help in these swing states. And Nikki Haley brings interest, brings attention among independents, among swing voters. There aren\u2019t many left, but what is left, they will listen to her,\u201d answered Luntz. \u201cAnd it will be a surprise because she has been so challenging of him, so negative towards him up to now. It\u2019s a very smart strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut in the end,\u201d he concluded, \u201cit\u2019s not going to be the surrogates. It\u2019s going to be what they [the candidates] say and how they say it in the last 48 hours that will determine these final votes. The key for Haley [Harris] is absolutely turnout, 18 to 29 women. The key for Donald Trump is absolutely union votes, young African-American men, and Latinos. It\u2019s too close to call right now.
