My husband Noah and I divorced a long time ago. He is currently married to his new wife, Katie. We have a daughter, Lexie, so we\u2019re still on good terms, attempting to provide her with a peaceful life.<\/p>\n
The ebb and flow of co-parenting with my ex-husband had become a familiar pattern: one week with me, then one week with him. To my relief, Katie had easily integrated herself into our daughter\u2019s life. While a twinge of discomfort persisted, I recognized her significant influence on our child\u2019s well-being.<\/p>\n
\u201cKatie is going to be a second mother to Lex,\u201d Noah said one day as he dropped our little girl off. \u201cBut she\u2019s not a replacement mother.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was okay with it. I\u2019d rather have Katie, who loved Noah and Lexie, in our lives than someone who just wanted Noah and nothing to do with his family.<\/p>\n

Walking up the front porch, deep in thought, I noticed that the door was slightly ajar and pushed it open further.<\/p>\n
\u201cHello?\u201d I called out.<\/p>\n
But a piercing scream ran through the house before I could say anything else.<\/p>\n
Lexie\u2019s scream. I knew it instantly.<\/p>\n
Panic grabbed a hold of me, propelling me inside without a second thought.<\/p>\n
after rushing through the house, I found myself in the kitchen where Katie stood, looming with a broom above my daughter.<\/p>\n
\u201cLexie?\u201d I asked, unsure of what I was seeing. \u201cWhat in the world is going on?!\u201d<\/p>\n
My initial reaction was to lash out at Katie, accusing her of harming my child \u2014 the scene had been right there before me. My daughter was on the floor, looking like she had been flung there, and her stepmother standing above her, holding a broom.<\/p>\n
But just as the words formed on my lips, my gaze shifted to a sudden scurry of tiny feet in the corner of the room.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a rat!\u201d Katie exclaimed, her eyes focused on the bin. \u201cLexie, jump up!\u201d<\/p>\n
Lexie sprung from the floor onto a chair.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom!\u201d Lexie shouted. \u201cHit it!\u201d<\/p>\n
Katie threw the boom to me while she grabbed a mop from next to where she was standing.<\/p>\n
\u201cDamn it,\u201d I said, chuckling.<\/p>\n
\u201cI tried to shoo it away,\u201d Katie said. \u201cBut then, Lexie tripped and fell because it ran over her shoe.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt went crazy!!\u201d Lexie said from the chair. \u201cIt just jumped onto my foot in the living room and then ran into the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay, let\u2019s just get it out of here,\u201d I said, trying to hide my sheepish grin.<\/p>\n
I opened the kitchen door to the back porch, and after a few minutes of silence and gentle shooing, the rat promptly took himself outside.<\/p>\n
\u201cCome on, honey,\u201d Katie said to Lexie, offering her a hand as Lexie jumped down.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll get an exterminator to come over tomorrow and check out the property,\u201d Katie told me, looking embarrassed. \u201cBut I\u2019ll leave some mousetraps around later.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was still shaking the thought that Katie might have hurt my child. I should have known that she wouldn\u2019t do anything to harm Lexie \u2014 she was \u201cour\u201d child, after all.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d Katie said, as if she could read my mind. \u201cThat was a bit of a scene to walk into.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s fine,\u201d I replied, my initial anger evaporating. \u201cI just\u2026 I\u2019m sorry, Katie. I just jumped the gun and thought that you were attacking her.\u201d<\/p>\n

We stood in the disheveled living room, the aftermath of the skirmish evident.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought I\u2019d have to fight a rat in my own home,\u201d Katie said, a genuine smile breaking through.<\/p>\n

I watched how Katie protected Lexie \u2014 even if it was from a rat. And I realized everything was okay. Katie would keep my child safe when I wasn\u2019t around.<\/p>\n
The afternoon unfolded with us sitting at the table, sipping tea, and sharing stories about our childhood fears. I figured it was essential for Lexie to see that despite everything, Katie and I were on good terms. That Lexie could have a stable family life even though her Dad and I were no longer together.<\/p>\n
I was grateful that I had kept my cool when I walked into Noah and Katie\u2019s house.
