Wesley pushed his plate away.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to eat meat.\u201d he complained. \u201cCan\u2019t you make anything else?\u201d he asked his mother.<\/p>\n

His mom looked at him surprisingly. \u201cWe had roast chicken yesterday, hamburgers the day before, fish on Friday\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Wesley sniffed derisively. \u201cYeah, yeah\u2026Whatever!\u201d and got up from the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cWesley,\u201d said his mother. \u201cPlease rinse your plate and put it in the dishwasher.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy should I? I\u2019m not your slave!\u201d
\n\u201cMy slave?\u201d gasped his mother, \u201cHow can helping out make you my slave?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t pay me, do you?\u201d asked Wesley triumphantly. \u201cWork without pay is slavery!\u201d<\/p>\n

Wesley\u2019s dad frowned. \u201cWe support you, son,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cWe house you, feed you, clothe you, and educate you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s your duty and my right!\u201d said Wesley.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the law says you have to do it too, but I don\u2019t have to do a thing!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPay you?\u201d asked the father calmly. \u201cAnd how much would you want for doing your chores?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve thought about that. For taking out the trash, $1, for washing dishes, $2, walking the dog, $4, cleaning my room, $5, and for cleaning the yard and mowing the lawn, $10. And you\u2019re lucky I\u2019m not demanding back pay.\u201d Wesley happily replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever!\u201d cried Wesley\u2019s mom angrily, but his father smiled calmly.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cI agree, Wesley. We will pay you for your work according to your demands. From now on you are a man, and we will treat you as such.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, son, we start tomorrow, OK? I\u2019ll put up a chart with your chores, and you write down what you\u2019ve done on a daily basis. At the end of each week, say Friday afternoons, you get paid. What do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wesley smiled happily. \u201cThat\u2019s just perfect, dad!\u201d<\/p>\n

Wesley\u2019s mom turned to his father. \u201cRick, how could you? He\u2019s disrespectful, lazy, and greedy. He needs to learn,\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Rick was smiling, and it wasn\u2019t a nice smile. \u201cDon\u2019t worry, Martha, I have a plan, and our dear little boy is in for a very unpleasant experience.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to teach him a lesson!\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The next day, Wesley walked into the house after football practice. It had been a long day at school and he was starving. \u201cHey mom!\u201d he said. \u201cWhat\u2019s for dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTurkey pot-pie with sweet potatoes and peas,\u201d his mother said smiling sweetly.<\/p>\n

He saw that his dad had put up a chart on the wall and he immediately walked over and filled in walking the dog and cleaning his room. Later he would take out the trash.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s $9 already, though Wesley happily. I\u2019m going to be rich!<\/p>\n

\u201cMom!\u201d he cried indignantly. \u201cYou didn\u2019t call me and I told you I was starving!\u201d<\/p>\n

His father replied: \u201cBut Wesley, now that you are earning your own money, you will have to support yourself. If you want your mother to cook for you, you will have to pay her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPAY HER?\u201d screamed Wesley, \u201cI\u2019m not going to pay her!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m afraid you\u2019ll have to dip into your savings and order take away, then.\u201d Wesley\u2019s mother said still smiling.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2026but\u2026That\u2019s not fair!\u201d screamed Wesley and stormed upstairs. He ordered a pizza and it cost him $15 plus the delivery fee and the tip. Being an independent man was expensive!<\/p>\n

The next morning he came down for breakfast to find his mother making bacon and eggs and it smelled delicious. \u201cHi mom,\u201d he said sweetly, \u201ccan I have my eggs over easy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, son!\u201d she smiled. \u201cThat will be $6 for breakfast!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re charging me for breakfast?\u201d cried Wesley angrily. \u201cThat\u2019s not fair!\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

That night, Wesley came down at dinnertime looking despondent. His parents were having dinner and it smelled delicious. Wesley\u2019s stomach rumbled. \u201cMom, dad?\u201d he said quietly. \u201cCan we talk?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSure son,\u201d said his father. \u201cWhat\u2019s on your mind?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to say I\u2019m sorry about that payment thing. I guess I never thought about everything you two do for me every day, and you never ask for anything in return.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were hoping you\u2019d realize that, Wesley. Everything we do for you, we do out of love, not obligation or duty,\u201d his mother said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, mom, I\u2019m so sorry,\u201d Wesley whispered, and his eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

That night, Wesley had one of the nicest evenings ever with his parents, and he learned one of the most important lessons: to appreciate all that his parents do for him and to do his part in helping his family.<\/p>\n
