A\u00a0Florida\u00a0family has been left devastated after their teenage son died from a\u00a0cardiac arrest\u00a0while running a 5K race.<\/p>\n

The family said they are going through \u201cthe unimaginable\u201d after Knox MacEwen, 14, died on Saturday morning, just months after his mother recovered from cancer.<\/p>\n

Knox was participating in a Junior Army Reserve Officers\u2019 Training Corps (JROTC) run on Saturday morning at Everglades High School in Florida when he suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed, police said.<\/p>\n

The 14-year-old was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

The teen has not yet been identified by police, but a\u00a0GoFundMe\u00a0page named him as Knox.<\/p>\n

His death is now under investigation.<\/p>\n

Following his death, his family said they were going through \u201cthe unimaginable\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has happened as Knox\u2019s mom, Julie, is still physically and financially recovering from a hard fought battle with cancer this last year,\u201d\u00a0a message posted on the GoFundMe page said.<\/p>\n

The message went on to say Knox was a \u201crevered member of his local community \u2013 a JROTC student, a volunteer with the kids ministry at his home church; and he was a beloved brother, son, grandson, nephew and friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jon Elswick, a pastor at Crossway Church, which the 14-year-old attended with his family, said his death has caused \u201cripple effects\u201d through the community. \u201cIt\u2019s been a really difficult time,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnox\u2019s dad said to me a couple of days ago, that Knox was the best of us,\u201d he told NBC Miami.<\/p>\n

The teen was a pupil at Western High School in Davie, Florida. His principal Jimmy Arrojo expressed \u201cdeepest condolences\u201d to the boy\u2019s family, classmates and teachers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am saddened to share tragic news impacting our Wildcat community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to offer my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, teachers, and classmates as they mourn this great loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ask our Wildcat community to rally around the family in prayer and support during this time of deep sorrow,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The GoFundMe page has raised over $80,000 for the teen\u2019s funeral costs. A message posted to the page said the funds raised will \u201callow Knox\u2019s parents, Kevin and Julie, to take time off work to grieve.\u201d<\/p>\n
