Finally, the doctor emerged, but the expression on his face said something was wrong. As I headed to Elena\u2019s room, my heart plummeted.<\/p>\n

I felt relieved when I saw Elena was fine.<\/p>\n

She had our baby in her arms, but her usually bubbly demeanor was nowhere to be seen.<\/h2>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something I need to tell you. Something I should have told you years ago,\u201d Elena said, and that\u2019s when I learned she carried a rare recessive gene that could cause a child to have pale skin and light features, regardless of the parents\u2019 appearance.<\/p>\n

She said she didn\u2019t tell me before because she believed the chances of our baby being born white were slim.<\/p>\n

I started at the baby girl. Her birthmark should have been proof enough she was mine, but I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions I struggled to juggle with.<\/p>\n

When we brought our little bundle of joy home, we knew we would face the judgement of my part of the family, but we never assumed their criticism would be so harsh.<\/h2>\n

Both my mother and brother called me an idiot who was letting his wife fool him, telling me I should face the facts that that baby wasn\u2019t mine.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s most, they laughed at the story of the gene Elena carried, saying it wasn\u2019t something real but nonsense.<\/p>\n

One night, I heard the door of my daughter\u2019s room open, so I went to check what was going on. It was my mom, she had a damp washcloth in her hands, trying to rub off my baby\u2019s birthmark in order to show me Elena was lying to me.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when I realized I had it enough.<\/p>\n

I told my mom to leave my home. \u201cMom, you either accept our baby or get out of our lives,\u201d I yelled at her.<\/p>\n

Elena was woken up by the screams. She started crying and I apologized for not standing up to her sooner.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarcus, for everyone\u2019s peace of mind, I think we should do a DNA test,\u201d Elena said.<\/p>\n

I knew that we didn\u2019t need to prove anything to anyone, but I agreed.<\/p>\n

As expected, the results showed the little one was our baby. I was her biological father.<\/p>\n

When we showed the test results to my family, they all apologized. Some of those apologies were heartfelt, and others were awkward.<\/p>\n
