Welker, following up, asked him, \u201cSo you think Liz Cheney should go to jail?\u201d He said,\u00a0\u201cAnybody who voted in favor \u2013\u201d Cutting him off, Welker said,\u00a0\u201cAre you going to direct your FBI director and your attorney general to send them to jail?\u201d Trump said,\u00a0\u201cNot at all. I think that they\u2019ll have to look at that \u2026 they can do whatever they want.\u201d<\/p>\n
As might be expected, Liz Cheney freaked out about those comments and Trump\u2019s allegations of wrongdoing. Without explaining where the files went, she declared, \u201cDonald Trump knows his claims about the select committee are ridiculous and false, as has been detailed extensively, including by Chairman Thompson.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also said, in the New York Times reports, that the idea that members and former members of Congress could be punished for destroying evidence is an \u201cassault on the rule of law.\u201d She declared, \u201cTrump\u2019s suggestion that members of Congress who later investigated his illegal and unconstitutional actions should be jailed is a continuation of his assault on the rule of law and the foundations of our republic.\u201d<\/p>\n
Further, she declared that there is no \u201cfactual or constitutional\u201d basis for punishing those who destroyed evidence, saying,\u00a0\u201cThere is no conceivably appropriate factual or constitutional basis for what Donald Trump is suggesting \u2014 a Justice Department investigation of the work of a congressional committee \u2014 and any lawyer who attempts to pursue that course would quickly find themselves engaged in sanctionable conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n
