Overcoming Addiction \u2013 An Inspirational Story:<\/p>\n

I saw this article in TODAY by Rachel Paula Abrahamson about Virginia \u2018Ginny\u2019 Burton, and wanted to share it because of how inspirational Ginny\u2019s story is (article link below).<\/p>\n

Ginny spent much\u00a0of her life high on drugs, and in and out of jail. But\u00a0she was able to eventually turn her life around, and she graduated recently from the University of Washington with a college degree.<\/p>\n

Her recovery and her story is truly amazing.<\/p>\n

Here is Rachel\u2019s TODAY Article About Ginny Burton<\/u>:<\/p>\n

Virginia \u201cGinny\u201d Burton was 6 years old when she was introduced to marijuana by her drug-addicted mother. At the age of 12, she was using crystal meth. By 14, Burton, a student in an accelerated learning program, had dropped out of school and was smoking crack.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went from being a really sweet kid to an angry and aggressive one,\u201d Burton, 48, told TODAY Health. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to be in a classroom. I just wanted to get high.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burton found herself bouncing from one juvenile detention facility to the next. By 2012, Burton, a mom of three, was homeless,\u00a0<\/a>addicted to heroin and had served multiple prison sentences. Her children were taken away.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy kids would grab my ankles when I went into the kitchen because that\u2019s where I smoked crack,\u201d Burton revealed. \u201cMy life was a nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not anymore.<\/p>\n

In May, Burton, who is more than eight years clean after\u00a0<\/a>getting sober while incarcerated, graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in political science.<\/p>\n

Last month, Burton shared side-by-side photos of the milestone moment on Facebook. The picture on the left is a haunting mug shot taken in 2005, and the other shows Burton beaming in her cap and gown.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow about that for motivation? I honestly thought I\u2019d die on a park bench with a needle in my arm or by gunshot to the head. I never would\u2019ve in a million years thought my life would look the way it does today,\u201d Burton wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cStop selling yourself short. You don\u2019t know what tomorrow might bring so you might consider starting today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was an emotional day for Burton and her children, Joseph, 29, Jordan, 28, and Gia, 15.<\/p>\n

\u201cI began crying as soon as the commencement program started,\u201d Burton explained. \u201cI\u2019d let myself down for so long. I always felt people like me from broken homes don\u2019t get to have good things. But we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ginny Burton hopes that her story will inspire others.<\/p>\n

In many ways, Burton feels reborn. She\u2019s discovered a love of hiking and climbed 9,000 feet on glaciers to the top of Washington\u2019s Mount Rainier in 2019. Burton meditates daily and eats a mostly plant-based diet.<\/p>\n

She hopes to use her education to one day recreate the prison system by turning it into a rehabilitative environment. To stay on track\u00a0<\/a>in her recovery,\u00a0 Burton attends regular Narcotics Anonymous meetings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started using when I was 6. I don\u2019t know who I was before I started using,\u201d Burton said. \u201cI\u2019m like this new creation. Today, I really feel like I am the person that I always knew was in my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

THAT is a truly inspirational story, which illustrates what is possible with addiction recovery.

Some of us have it easier than others in life, and I think Ginny\u2019s \u2018level of difficulty\u2019 for life is a 10 out of a 10.<\/p>\n

Her drug addicted mom gave her marijuana\u00a0at the age of\u00a06!\u00a0<\/strong><\/u>Life does not begin\u00a0much worse.<\/p>\n

But, Ginny was able to persevere\u00a0somehow<\/em>\u00a0and eventually overcome the nearly\u00a0impossible obstacles that were put in front of her.<\/p>\n
