\u201cLighten up? LIGHTEN UP? Our children are sleeping on the floor like animals while you play video games in their room! What is wrong with you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing\u2019s wrong with me,\u201d he huffed. \u201cI\u2019m just trying to have a little me-time. Is that so terrible?\u201d<\/p>\n

I tried not to scream. \u201cYou know what? We\u2019re not doing this right now. Go put the boys in their beds. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m in the middle of\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

He grumbled but got up, shuffling past me.<\/p>\n

I scooped up Alex, my heart breaking at how dirty his face was. As I tucked him into\u00a0\u00a0bed<\/span><\/a>, I made a decision. If Mark wanted to act like a child, then that\u2019s exactly how I\u2019d treat him.<\/p>\n

The following morning, I put my plan into action.<\/p>\n

\u201cLanguage!\u201d I scolded. \u201cIt\u2019s your very own chore chart! See? You can earn gold stars for cleaning your room, doing the dishes, and putting away your toys!\u201d<\/p>\n

I cut him off. \u201cOh, and don\u2019t forget! We have a new house rule. All screens off by 9 p.m. sharp. That includes your phone, mister!\u201d<\/p>\n

For the following week, I stuck to my guns. Every night at 9, I\u2019d shut off the Wi-Fi and unplug his gaming console.<\/p>\n

I even tucked him into bed with a glass of milk and read him \u201cGoodnight Moon\u201d in my most soothing voice.<\/p>\n

His meals were served on plastic plates with little dividers. I cut his sandwiches into dinosaur shapes and gave him animal crackers for snacks. When he complained, I\u2019d say things like, \u201cUse your words, honey. Big boys don\u2019t whine.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chore chart was a particular point of contention. Every time he completed a task, I\u2019d make a big show of giving him a gold star.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook at you, putting your laundry away all by yourself! Mommy\u2019s so proud!\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019d grit his teeth and mutter, \u201cI\u2019m not a child, Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n

The breaking point came about a week into my little experiment. Mark had just been sent to the timeout corner for throwing a fit about his two-hour screen time limit. He sat there, fuming, while I calmly set the kitchen timer.<\/p>\n

I raised an eyebrow. \u201cOh? Are you sure about that? Because grown men don\u2019t make their children sleep on the floor so they can play video games all night.\u201d<\/p>\n

He deflated a little. \u201cOkay, okay, I get it! I\u2019m sorry!\u201d<\/p>\n

I studied him for a moment. He did look genuinely remorseful, but I wasn\u2019t going to let him off the hook when I had one last blow to deliver.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I accept your apology,\u201d I said sweetly. \u201cBut I\u2019ve already called your mom\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The color drained from his face. \u201cYou didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right on cue, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to reveal Mark\u2019s mother, looking every bit the disappointed parent.<\/p>\n

\u201cMark!\u201d she bellowed, marching into the house. \u201cDid you really make my sweeties sleep on the floor so you could play your little games?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark looked like he wanted the floor to open up and swallow him whole. \u201cMom, it\u2019s not\u2026 I mean, I didn\u2019t\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

She turned to me, her face softening. \u201cSarah, dear, I\u2019m so sorry you had to deal with this. I thought I raised him better than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

I patted her arm. \u201cIt\u2019s not your fault, Linda. Some boys just take longer to grow up than others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark\u2019s face was beet red. \u201cMom, please. I\u2019m 35 years old!\u201d<\/p>\n

Linda ignored him, turning back to me. \u201cWell, not to worry. I\u2019ve cleared my schedule for the next week. I\u2019ll whip this boy back into shape in no time!\u201d<\/p>\n

As Linda bustled off to the kitchen, muttering about the state of the dishes, I caught Mark\u2019s eye. He looked utterly defeated.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cI really am sorry. I was selfish and irresponsible. It won\u2019t happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n

I softened a little. \u201cI know, honey. But when I\u2019m away, I need to know you\u2019ve got things under control. The boys need a father, not another playmate.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded, looking ashamed. \u201cYou\u2019re right. I\u2019ll do better, I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled and gave him a quick kiss. \u201cI know you will. Now, why don\u2019t you go help your mother with the dishes? If you do a good job, maybe we can have ice cream for dessert.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Mark trudged off to the kitchen, I couldn\u2019t help but feel a little smug. Lesson learned, I hoped. And if not\u2026 well, I still had that timeout corner ready and waiting.<\/p>\n
