I faltered. Just slightly. Fine, that explained the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know I never knew my parents,\u201d he continued, voice hoarse. \u201cI told you that.\u201d<\/p>\n

I did. It was something we had talked about in the early years, how he had bounced from home to home, how he had no memories of his mother except for faint details.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe gave me up when I was four,\u201d he said. \u201cI barely remembered her. Just flashes. The scent of her perfume in the wind. The sound of her laugh. But three months ago, she found me. My mother found me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did she find you?\u201d I asked. \u201cI need more information. I need to understand this, Chad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat silly article,\u201d he said. \u201cThe firefighter piece. The one about me saving the cat from the tree and being the \u201ccat whisperer\u201d because everyone calls me to save the animals,\u201d he huffed a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n

That article had been adorable. We had it framed for our study.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe saw my picture, Helena,\u201d he continued. \u201cSaw my last name and that bit about my foster care background and knew it had to be me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe showed up at the station,\u201d he said, rubbing his jaw. \u201cShe told me that she had spent years looking for me. That she had never stopped. That giving me up was the worst mistake of her life, but she was alone back then. She had no money to take care of herself, let alone her child. He shook his head. \u201cHelena,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cI couldn\u2019t let her meet the kids until I was sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the flowers? The cake?\u201d my voice was unsteady.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe lives in a nursing home, Helena. It\u2019s not much of a place. She doesn\u2019t have anyone. She likes sweets. And flowers make her smile. I don\u2019t know, sweetheart\u2026 I just wanted to do something for her. For the years she\u2019s missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

A shaky hand covered her mouth, her shoulder trembling as silent sobs racked through her. She hadn\u2019t just missed Chad. She had missed all of this. She had missed birthdays, weddings, Christmas mornings, scraped knees and bedtimes stories, not just with Chad, but our children, too.<\/p>\n
