I waited for his text.<\/p>\n

When the car arrived, I got into it and the driver took me to a sweet little bed and breakfast.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere you go, ma\u2019am,\u201d he said, taking my suitcases out.<\/p>\n

I was just unpacking my pajamas when the owner showed up at the door.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t believe how lucky I had gotten with the lawyer. I didn\u2019t know him well, but at least he was taking care of me.<\/p>\n

He slid a folder across the desk.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father was a smart man, Dawn,\u201d he said. \u201cHe knew Charlotte would most likely throw you out the moment she got control of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe knew?\u201d I gulped.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why he made me draw this up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Matthew opened the folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeven years ago, your father inherited a very large sum of money. It was almost two million dollars. It was from a distant relative who didn\u2019t have any children, but your father took care of her when she needed help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I gasped.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, he didn\u2019t end up telling either of you. But I\u2019m sure he had his reasons. Now, here\u2019s the catch, Dawn. Your father split the money between you and Charlotte.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe gets a share too?\u201d I said slowly, my heart sinking.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Dawn. But there\u2019s a condition. Charlotte has to share the house with you equally.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat up straighter. Suddenly, there seemed like a way out of this mess.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your sister refuses, she gets absolutely nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more,\u201d he continued. \u201cYour father left you this.\u201d<\/p>\n

He slid a letter across the table to me.<\/p>\n

It was my dad\u2019s writing.<\/p>\n

Dawn, my darling,<\/p>\n

I know Charlotte, sweetheart. I know what she\u2019ll do. But you are smarter than her. You always have been. The money is in a safety deposit box. Use it wisely, my girl.<\/p>\n

I stared at the details of the bank account.<\/p>\n

I took Dad\u2019s watch off my wrist and turned it over. On the back, there were tiny scratches. Four digits, faint but visible.<\/p>\n

Matthew grinned.<\/p>\n

I laughed, like really, really laughed, for the first time since he d-ied.<\/p>\n

Charlotte had the house, but she also had all the debt. And she had just kicked out the one person who could save her from losing everything.<\/p>\n

I was still staying at the bed and breakfast a few days later when Charlotte called me. I let it ring while I went to get myself a glass of water.<\/p>\n

Then, I picked it up.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello?\u201d I said sweetly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew, didn\u2019t you?\u201d she spat.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnew what?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe house,\u201d she snapped. \u201cThe lawyer just called me. There is debt. A lot of it. Like thousands of dollars. If they aren\u2019t paid off, the house gets taken, Dawn. And you\u2026\u201d she let out a shaky breath. \u201cYou have the money, don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

I twirled my dad\u2019s watch around my wrist.<\/p>\n

\u201cI might have the money\u2026\u201d I said. \u201cBut we don\u2019t exactly have a good history, do we? You did kick me out.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to help me!\u201d she said finally.<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would have helped you, Charlotte,\u201d I said. \u201cIf you had been nicer to me growing up, sis. Maybe then, I\u2019d feel bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I hung up.<\/p>\n

Matthew was helping me look for a furnished apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething small will be perfect,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have a few months before you go off to college, Dawn. You don\u2019t need to be tied down to a big home. An apartment is the way to go. And you\u2019ll be eighteen soon and then you can do whatever you want. For now, you need to focus on school.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for helping me,\u201d I said. \u201cI would have been lost without you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDawn, your father told me all about you and how difficult your sister made your life. Especially after your mother left the family. I promised your father that I would get you back on your feet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some weeks later, I was in my little studio apartment in an artsy part of town. And I loved it.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know what happened to Charlotte, but when I walked past our house one evening, I saw a SOLD sign in the front. I probably should have felt bad, but I didn\u2019t. It wasn\u2019t my home without my father.<\/p>\n
