My husband, Ron, died a month ago, and I\u2019ve gotten used to living off my savings. I had been with Ron for the longest time, so being in that house alone was too much.<\/p>\n
I decided to move in with my only son, Connor, and his wife, Eve, for a while until I felt strong enough to make my next move. <\/p>\n
We let the house out, and I gave the monthly rent to my son as a sign of good faith because I didn\u2019t want them to think I would extend my stay indefinitely.<\/p>\n
Things started off great. Eve treated me with kindness, caring for me as she would for her own mother. <\/p>\n
Connor works long hours as an IT Technician, and Eve is a homemaker. Connor gave me a room on the first floor of their home.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, you don\u2019t have to worry about your knees and the stairs,\u201d he said, lugging my bags in on the first day.
\nFor the first few weeks, Eve and I enjoyed each other\u2019s company. We cooked together, shared stories, and even started a small garden in the backyard. It felt like a healing period, a time for me to gather strength after losing Ron.<\/p>\n
However, as time passed, things began to change. Eve started getting too comfortable and gradually threw all her chores onto me. It started small, with her asking me to help with the dishes or fold laundry. Soon, I found myself doing all the housework while she spent her days on the couch, watching TV or browsing her phone.<\/p>\n
\u201cCould you get the groceries, Lucy? I\u2019m just so tired,\u201d she\u2019d say. Or, \u201cWould you mind cleaning the bathrooms today? My back is killing me.\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t mind helping out at first. After all, I was living in their house. But it became clear that Eve was taking advantage of me. Connor was oblivious to the situation, as he was rarely home and, when he was, he was too exhausted to notice.<\/p>\n
One evening, after a particularly exhausting day of cleaning, cooking, and babysitting my granddaughter, I decided enough was enough. I had come here to heal, not to be a live-in maid. I needed to teach Eve a lesson, and Christmas seemed like the perfect opportunity.<\/p>\n
Christmas was a big deal in our family. We always went all out with decorations, a grand feast, and plenty of gifts. This year, I took charge of the preparations, but with a twist. I made sure to involve Eve in every single task.<\/p>\n
\u201cEve, can you help me with the tree decorations?\u201d I asked sweetly.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course, Lucy,\u201d she replied, clearly not thrilled.<\/p>\n
Every time she tried to pass a chore onto me, I\u2019d gently insist that we do it together. I involved her in baking, cleaning, wrapping gifts, and even setting the table. By the end of the day, she was visibly exhausted.<\/p>\n
On Christmas morning, as we gathered around the tree, I handed out the gifts. When it was Eve\u2019s turn, I gave her a beautifully wrapped box. Inside was a simple card that read:<\/p>\n

Moving in with Connor and Eve turned out to be a blessing. It taught me that sometimes, people need a little nudge to understand and appreciate the efforts of others.
