I love the freedom, the quiet, and the sense of being in charge of something so big and strong.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not just a job. That\u2019s my job.But what about my family? That\u2019s not how they see it.<\/p>\n
My mom always asks me when I get home, \u201cAre you still doing that truck thing?\u201d as if it were a phase I\u2019ll grow out of.My sister always tells me that I should \u201cdo something more feminine,\u201d like become a teacher like she did or work in an office. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to be that woman at family events, do you?\u201d she asks with a grin.<\/p>\n
What about my dad? He just nods his head. \u201cThat\u2019s not very ladylike, is it?\u201dworking against a wave of doubt and criticism in our own ways.<\/p>\n
I started talking about my job driving a truck and how each mile on the road was a sign of my freedom and a protest against the straight lines they wanted me to follow. When Mara listened, her eyes lit up, and I thought, maybe our lives aren\u2019t so different after all. We both went our own ways, even though the people closest to us didn\u2019t see any value in them.<\/p>\n
