I\u2019m 37, single\u2014and honestly, I blame my mom. She\u2019s made my love life a total disaster. Her idea of \u201ccaring\u201d has always been smothering, controlling, and over-the-top. Every guy I ever dated? She chased them off like they were intruders. None of them were ever good enough for her precious daughter. But then came Theo. And for the first time, I\u00a0knew<\/em>\u2014he was different. He was the one. Which is exactly why I didn\u2019t tell her about him.<\/p>\n

I wanted one evening that was just ours, without her lurking in the background. I invited him over for dinner\u2014candles glowing, wine poured, fresh pie on the counter. Everything felt perfect. We were talking, laughing, leaning in close\u2026 until I heard a sneeze.<\/p>\n

I opened the hallway closet\u2014and there she was. My mother. Curled up in a nest of coats like she was part of the insulation.<\/p>\n

He looked confused. I grabbed the paper, unfolded it, and nearly died on the spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, are you\u00a0serious?!<\/em>\u201d I shouted.<\/p>\n

Theo gave a polite, awkward smile. \u201cI\u2026 think I should go.\u201d<\/p>\n

And just like that, he left. My heart shattered into a thousand pieces.<\/p>\n

I was sure I\u2019d never hear from him again. But a few days later, there was a knock at the door. I opened it\u2014and there he was. Theo. Holding flowers.<\/p>\n

Before I could say anything, he smiled. \u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

I grinned. \u201cWhere are we going?\u201d<\/p>\n

His smile faltered. \u201cActually\u2026 I need to ask you something first. Would you mind if I asked your mom out on a date?\u201d<\/p>\n

I must have looked like I\u2019d been hit by lightning. A date? With\u00a0my mom?<\/em><\/p>\n

He held up his hands. \u201cNot like that! I\u2019m not\u00a0interested<\/em>\u00a0in her. But I realized something\u2014she\u2019s not going to stop interfering unless she truly believes I\u2019m someone she can trust. And if she wants to \u2018get to know me,\u2019 maybe giving her what she wants, just one night, could help.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood there, torn between admiration and nausea. I didn\u2019t know if I should slap him or marry him. He wasn\u2019t giving in to her nonsense\u2014he was trying to win her over, in her own language.<\/p>\n

We talked it out. I laid down very clear boundaries\u2014no flirting, no romantic anything, no actual\u00a0date<\/em>\u00a0vibes. He promised. He laughed and said, \u201cYou think I\u00a0want<\/em>\u00a0to woo your mother? I\u2019m just trying to survive her.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, two nights later, I did something surreal\u2014I helped Theo pick out a bouquet\u2026 for my mom. Then I watched him drive away to take her out while I stayed home, pacing like a maniac and texting my best friend Rina, who responded with \u201cTHIS IS INSANE\u201d followed by \u201cGirl, is he even real?!\u201d<\/p>\n
