Around 9:30 p.m., I had just finished getting my youngest ready for bed when the phone rang. A child dialed 911, according to dispatch, but remained silent. I went to check out the modest residence in my zone where they tracked the call.<\/p>\n
I knocked, and a young lad in pajama shorts, barefoot, opened the door and held a phone as if it were his most prized possession. He appeared anxious but resolute.<\/p>\n
I heard him say that he was hungry. that all day he had not eaten. He and his younger sister, who was sleeping in the back room, were the only adults home.<\/p>\n
My heart fell.<\/p>\n
I then phoned for backup to deliver food, not to make any arrests. I knew I couldn\u2019t abandon them in that manner, but I wasn\u2019t sure what I was getting into.<\/p>\n
That evening became something I never would have imagined.<\/p>\n
I attempted to talk to the youngster as I awaited assistance. He was eight years old and went by Mateo. Despite the late hour, his five-year-old sister, Sofia, was fast sleeping. According to Mateo, their mother worked two jobs and occasionally returned home very late or not at all. She had left early this morning for her shift at the diner and hadn\u2019t returned.<\/p>\n
Mateo appeared older than his years and almost too accustomed to this kind of circumstance. He informed me that when their mother couldn\u2019t be present, he frequently made sure Sofia ate before bed. However, they would run out of everything tonight. The jar of peanut butter was empty as well.<\/p>\n
An ambulance arrived outside, and the sirens pierced the still neighborhood. First responders spread the word quickly, and<\/p>\n
it seems that one of the paramedics on duty, a woman called Rosa, had heard about the dispatch call. She packed a few granola bars in her luggage for emergencies, along with sandwiches and juice bottles.<\/p>\n
Rosa entered with a brown paper bag full of food. Mateo was instantly calmed by her presence. \u201cYou must be starving,\u201d she remarked gently as she gave him a foil-wrapped sandwich. <\/p>\n
