which circulated on social media, shows Rep. Omar advising individuals on how to respond if approached by immigration enforcement officers.<\/p>\n
In her comments, Rep. Omar encourages individuals who may be undocumented, or whose legal status has lapsed, <\/p>\n
to know their rights and to refrain from answering questions without legal representation. \u201cYou are not obligated to <\/p>\n
answer their questions,\u201d she said. \u201cJust state that you are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions.\u201d<\/p>\n
The video sparked strong reactions online. Rep. Gill shared it with a critical message on his social media account, <\/p>\n
stating that such actions raise concerns about the role of public officials in immigration discussions.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for Rep. Gill later clarified his remarks, saying his concern was about the appropriateness of a U.S. lawmaker advising individuals who<\/p>\n
may be violating immigration laws. \u201cRepresentative Omar\u2019s conduct raises questions about to whom she is most loyal \u2014 the American people or those who are here unlawfully,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
The clip emerged as federal immigration officials begin stepping up enforcement under a renewed focus on individuals with criminal records or outstanding deportation orders. Former immigration official Tom Homan, <\/p>\n
now working with the current administration, has said that while the initial focus remains on public safety threats, broader enforcement efforts are expected.<\/p>\n
