Since Rep. Ocasio-Cortez was elected to represent parts of the Bronx and Queens in 2019, major crime in some neighborhoods has increased significantly, according to data cited by The New York Post.<\/p>\n
In particular, the 110th Precinct in Queens, which includes part of Roosevelt Avenue, has experienced a 105% increase in major crimes such as burglary, robbery, and auto theft. The 115th Precinct, also in her district, has seen a reported 85% rise.<\/p>\n
Community Frustration Mounts<\/p>\n
Some residents say that while Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has become a prominent voice nationally, local issues have not received the same attention.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe doesn\u2019t live in the neighborhood, she doesn\u2019t care,\u201d said Elmhurst resident Guadalupe Alvarez, who once supported the congresswoman but now feels let down. Alvarez described feeling forced to consider leaving her community due to safety concerns and said attempts to raise the issue at a local town hall were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe did a very silent exit through the back,\u201d Alvarez told the Post, referring to a previous community meeting. \u201cYou\u2019re there because of people from my community, and you\u2019re not doing anything for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Local voices, including City Council candidate Ramses Frias, echoed the sentiment, calling for more focus on the needs of the district.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are suffering. They\u2019re scared to go outside,\u201d Frias said. \u201cWe need leadership that prioritizes community safety and real solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Safety and Public Services<\/p>\n
Experts have pointed to several factors behind the rise in crime, including staffing challenges within local police departments and broader issues related to public service resources.<\/p>\n
\u201cNobody wants to be a police officer right now,\u201d said Hannah Meyers, Director of Policing and Public Safety at the Manhattan Institute. She noted that reduced recruitment and strained resources can impact response times and community support.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of focus on broader national issues, but what\u2019s happening locally is just as important,\u201d Meyers added. \u201cWe need to make sure neighborhoods feel safe and supported.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking Ahead<\/p>\n
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has previously stated that she remains committed to fighting for economic and social justice, often highlighting national issues like income inequality and access to healthcare. However, growing concerns at home may prompt a renewed focus on local priorities.<\/p>\n
As the congresswoman continues to build her platform, residents in her district say they are hoping for more attention to the day-to-day realities they face\u2014particularly when it comes to safety, cleanliness, and neighborhood quality of life.<\/p>\n
