He used to be a loud kid. Wild. He never sat still.
\nBut ever since we came back from the farm last fall, he won\u2019t talk above a whisper.
\nAnd he only sleeps in the barn now. Wrapped around Daisy, the cow.<\/p>\n
Mom thinks it\u2019s cute.
\nDad says it\u2019s a phase.
\nBut I heard what he said the other night when he thought no one was around.<\/p>\n
He whispered into Daisy\u2019s ear:
\n\u201cI didn\u2019t tell them it was me. I know you saw, but you didn\u2019t tell either. Thank you.\u201dDaisy didn\u2019t move.
\nShe just blinked. Slow. Like she understood.<\/p>\n
When I finally confronted him, he cried.
\nNot out of fear\u2014but relief.
\nHe grabbed my hand and said,
\n\u201cDon\u2019t open the toolbox. Don\u2019t show them the photo.\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t know what toolbox he meant.
