Women\u2019s underwear has long held a small mystery that many are only now beginning to understand\u2014the purpose of that extra piece of fabric sewn into the crotch area.<\/p>\n
At last, the confusion is being cleared up. Like many others, I\u2019ve worn underwear all my life without ever stopping to wonder why that extra layer\u2014often referred to as a \u201cgusset\u201d\u2014is there.<\/p>\n
Was it designed to secretly hold tampons or lipstick? Or maybe to provide extra padding for added comfort while sitting?<\/p>\n
For years, it seemed like only the \u201cunderwear gods\u201d had the answer. Curious minds turned to social media to finally get to the bottom of this puzzling detail.<\/p>\n
Someone on X asked: \u201cI\u2019ve always wondered why underwear has these holes???\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, another said: \u201cDon\u2019t listen to the people saying it\u2019s for \u2018reinforcement\u2019 or some rubbish.<\/p>\n
However, nobody could have expected the true reason.<\/p>\n
It doesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s a thong, G-string, Brazilian, panties or briefs- they\u2019ve all for that little pocket sewn in. And apparently, it\u2019s called a gusset (ew).<\/p>\n
Sweeping aside the name of it, which sounds like a drainpipe, its gusset is usually made of cotton and is supposed to support hygiene.<\/p>\n
This online user was spot on with their explanation, saying: \u201cThe extra piece of fabric is called a gusset, and it\u2019s there to reinforce the crotch area.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt makes the piece more durable and stops moisture from seeping through. You could topstitch so there\u2019s no hole, but it\u2019s not really necessary and can cause irritation.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Cheeky Wipes, it also serves a few purposes.<\/p>\n
They state that a gusset is used to keep the person cool, prevent sweating, and stop discharge from the vagina from damaging your trousers.<\/p>\n
It also allows your vulva to breathe, too.<\/p>\n
Underwear company Leonisa also pointed out that while men\u2019s underwear may also have this feature, it\u2019s \u2018far more common\u2019 in women\u2019s pants.<\/p>\n
\u201cGussets can be found in just about every type of underwear for women, from boy-shorts, to bikini panties, to thongs.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe panty gusset serves several purposes. For one, the extra layer of fabric reinforces the underwear in the crotch area, which is often the narrowest part of the underwear,\u201d their website states.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis prolongs the life of the underwear and helps it to last longer. The extra layer of fabric also helps catch discharge, sweat and other things, keeping you cool and dry as you go about your day.\u201d<\/p>\n
