Trump immediately bristled. \u201cWhen you say that, darling, that\u2019s fake news,\u201d he shot back, raising his voice. As Alcindor attempted to interrupt, Trump leaned in sharply. \u201cBe quiet, listen! You don\u2019t listen. You never listen. That\u2019s why you\u2019re second-rate. We\u2019re not going to war\u2014we\u2019re gonna clean up our cities. We\u2019re gonna clean them up so they don\u2019t kill five people every weekend. That\u2019s not war, that\u2019s common sense.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another reporter asked why Trump was focusing on Chicago when other U.S. cities face higher crime rates. The president countered with statistics.<\/p>\n
\u201cExcuse me, do you know how many people were killed in Chicago last weekend? Eight. Do you know how many were killed the week before? Seven. Do you know how many were wounded? Seventy-four people were wounded,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou think there\u2019s worse than that? I don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump has hinted for weeks that he may deploy the National Guard to Chicago, citing what he calls the city\u2019s \u201clawlessness.\u201d In Washington, D.C., his administration went even further last month, assuming direct control of the Metropolitan Police Department.<\/p>\n
The president has argued that such moves are necessary to protect communities that he says have been \u201cabandoned by failed leadership.\u201d His critics, however, warn that federal intervention risks escalating tensions and undermining local authority.<\/p>\n
For Trump, the clash with reporters underscores his larger messaging: framing violent crime in major Democratic-led cities as a failure of local government and a justification for stronger federal intervention.<\/p>\n
Whether Chicago will actually see federal troops on its streets remains uncertain.
