I was in a restaurant chatting with a friend when a guy sat next to me. He said, \u201cBefore you get your hopes up, I have a girlfriend.\u201d I looked at him, smiled, and replied, \u201cBefore you get your hopes up, I have dreams bigger than this conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He seemed taken aback, so I explained. \u201cI\u2019ve spent years focusing on myself\u2014building my career, traveling, and working on my mental health. I\u2019m here today celebrating a new chapter in my life, not looking for one to start with anyone else.\u201d My friend smiled knowingly; she\u2019d been by my side through all the ups and downs.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s expression softened. \u201cWow, I didn\u2019t mean to assume anything. I guess we all think people are looking for what we are.\u201d He chuckled awkwardly and apologized. We ended up having a surprisingly deep conversation about boundaries, self-worth, and how often people misread situations because of their own insecurities.<\/p>\n

When I left the restaurant that day, I felt empowered. It was a reminder that our value isn\u2019t determined by anyone else\u2019s assumptions.
