Everything had changed, and the catalyst had been a simple email that illuminated their intentions towards me, intentions that I could no longer ignore.<\/p>\n

During their absence, guided by a lawyer\u2019s advice, I had taken steps to reclaim what was unequivocally mine\u2014my home, my dignity, my autonomy. My son and his wife might have anticipated a compliant old man, willing to fade gracefully into the background of their well-curated lives.
