I stared at the screen long after Emily lowered the phone.<\/p>\n
Forty years.<\/p>\n
I had built an entire life on the assumption that chapter was closed \u2014 not tragic, not romantic, just unfinished and quietly shelved. And now here it was, asking to be read again.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d I said honestly. \u201cWhat if he\u2019s disappointed? What if I am?\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily smiled, the kind of smile only someone young enough to still believe in beginnings can give.
