\nAnother of her walking beside the same woman, both smiling but cautious, like they were learning each other\u2019s pace.
\nThen one that made my chest tighten: Avery hugging a man, his arms wrapped around her like he was afraid she might disappear.<\/p>\n

Marisa\u2019s voice was sharp.
\n\u201cShe\u2019s been sneaking around behind your back. Meeting strangers. Lying to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I kept scrolling.<\/p>\n

The messages weren\u2019t reckless.
\nThey weren\u2019t flirty.
\nThey weren\u2019t dangerous.<\/p>\n

They were gentle.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t want to scare him.<\/em>
\nI just want to understand.<\/em>
\nI promise, I\u2019m not trying to replace him.<\/em><\/p>\n

I looked up slowly.
\n\u201cHow did you get these?\u201d<\/p>\n

Marisa hesitated \u2014 just a fraction too long.
\n\u201cI checked her phone. She was acting weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something inside me went cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou went through my daughter\u2019s phone,\u201d I said quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s a teenager,\u201d Marisa snapped. \u201cAnd clearly hiding something big. You\u2019re too emotionally attached to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could respond, the front door opened.<\/p>\n

Avery stopped short when she saw us \u2014 the phone in my hand, Marisa standing stiff and triumphant.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was going to tell you,\u201d Avery said quickly, her voice shaking. \u201cI swear. I just didn\u2019t know how.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t look at Marisa.<\/p>\n

I opened my arms.<\/p>\n

Avery crossed the room in two steps and collapsed into them, gripping my shirt the same way she\u2019d gripped my scrubs thirteen years ago.<\/p>\n

Marisa let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
\n\u201cSo you\u2019re just okay with this?\u201d<\/p>\n

I finally looked at her.
\n\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cBut I\u2019m okay with\u00a0her<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Avery wiped her face and took a breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re my grandparents,\u201d she said softly. \u201cMy mom\u2019s parents.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room went silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t know I survived,\u201d Avery continued. \u201cThe hospital told them there were no survivors. They buried their daughter and thought that was it.\u201d<\/p>\n

My knees went weak.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey found me through an old court record when I applied for a scholarship,\u201d she said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t want to show up unannounced. They just wanted to know if I was alive. If I was loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked up at me, eyes shining.
\n\u201cI told them about you. About everything. They said I was lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marisa scoffed.
\n\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t think this was something your fianc\u00e9 should know?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis,\u201d I said calmly, \u201cis not your decision to expose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mouth fell open.
\n\u201cSo you\u2019re choosing this drama over me?\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t raise my voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m choosing my daughter over someone who thinks love means control.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marisa stared at me, then grabbed her coat and left without another word.<\/p>\n

Later that night, Avery and I sat on the couch, wrapped in blankets.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was scared you\u2019d think I was replacing you,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

I kissed the top of her head.
\n\u201cYou were my daughter before you could spell the word,\u201d I said. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t change.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, I met them.<\/p>\n

Two people who had lost everything \u2014 and then found a piece of it again.<\/p>\n

Her grandmother cried into my shoulder.
