I blinked, trying to piece together what on earth they could mean. The man on the left, a tall fellow with a stern face, flipped open a badge. \u201cWe\u2019re with Family Services,\u201d he announced, as if that explained everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cFamily Services?\u201d I repeated, bewilderment clear in my voice. \u201cI was just trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man on the right, slightly shorter and with an air of impatience, crossed his arms. \u201cMr. Harris, the woman you assisted is involved in an ongoing investigation. She\u2019s been on the run with her child, and your involvement may have complicated matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt my breath catch in my throat. \u201cI didn\u2019t know,\u201d I said, earnestly. \u201cShe seemed in distress. The baby\u2014he was so cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

The taller man seemed to soften slightly. \u201cWe understand your intentions were good, Mr. Harris. But you might have put yourself in a difficult position.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shorter man continued, \u201cThe woman is a suspect in a case we\u2019re working. It\u2019s not safe to harbor or aid individuals involved in criminal activities, no matter how innocent or desperate they appear.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mind was reeling. I pictured the woman\u2019s trembling hands, the baby\u2019s wide, innocent eyes. Whatever trouble she was in, I couldn\u2019t shake the empathy I felt.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d I asked, my voice quieter now, uncertainty creeping in.<\/p>\n

The taller man closed his badge and slipped it back into his pocket. \u201cWe\u2019re not here to arrest you, Mr. Harris. You\u2019re not in trouble\u2014for now. We just need to know everything you remember about her, any details that could help us locate her.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded, relief mingling with the anxiety still coursing through me. \u201cOf course. I\u2019ll help however I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

We moved to the kitchen, where the men sat down with me, notebooks ready. I recounted everything: what she looked like, what she said, even the direction she went when she left. They listened intently, scribbling down notes, occasionally asking for clarification.<\/p>\n

As I spoke, I couldn\u2019t help but wonder what had driven her to this point. What could she have done to warrant such a pursuit? I kept seeing her eyes, full of gratitude and fear.<\/p>\n

When I finished, the men stood to leave. \u201cThank you for your cooperation, Mr. Harris,\u201d the taller one said. \u201cWe\u2019ll be in touch if we have more questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

As they walked to the door, I found myself calling after them. \u201cIf you find her, will she and the baby be alright?\u201d<\/p>\n

The shorter man paused, turned slightly, and offered a small nod. \u201cThat\u2019s our aim, Mr. Harris. To ensure the child is safe. We have resources to help, but we need to find them first.\u201d<\/p>\n

I closed the door after they left, the house once again silent. I felt an ache, not just for the woman and her child but for the complexities of the world we live in. I hoped, desperately, that she would find a way to safety, that her story could take a turn for the better.<\/p>\n
