Jason returned, this time with a manager and two employees. The manager\u2014Ms. Deirdre\u2014looked at my face and barked, \u201cCall security. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI already called police,\u201d I said, voice trembling. \u201cPlease keep them here until they arrive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deirdre\u2019s eyes sharpened. \u201cNo one leaves that door,\u201d she told her staff. \u201cNot until we get answers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rick\u2019s gaze narrowed, but he shifted toward the exit anyway.<\/p>\n

Then sirens pierced the air\u2014close now.<\/p>\n

Dr. Porter\u2019s calm finally cracked. She spun, speaking sharply into her phone, and Rick\u2019s head snapped up like he\u2019d been given an order.<\/p>\n

He grabbed a cart handle and shoved it sideways across the aisle, creating a barricade. Shoppers gasped.<\/p>\n

Deirdre shouted, \u201cHey! Stop!\u201d<\/p>\n

Rick bolted toward the emergency exit.<\/p>\n

Dr. Porter followed\u2014quick, abrupt, her grace gone.<\/p>\n

Nathan grabbed my hand. \u201cEmma,\u201d he whispered, desperate, \u201cif they get away, they\u2019ll punish the boy. They\u2019ll punish Lily later. We need to get ahead of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police officers surged through the front doors, weapons lowered but ready.<\/p>\n

I pointed. \u201cThat woman,\u201d I said, loud and clear. \u201cShe threatened my child. She\u2019s running.\u201d<\/p>\n

An officer sprinted after them.<\/p>\n

Dr. Porter glanced back one last time, eyes cold\u2014and mouthed something to Nathan that I couldn\u2019t hear.<\/p>\n

But Nathan went pale, as if the secret he\u2019d just been told would ruin us.<\/p>\n

He whispered, shaking: \u201cShe said\u2026 Marisol is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

My throat tightened. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan\u2019s eyes filled. \u201cAnd she said\u2026 I\u2019m the only \u2018legal parent\u2019 left.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him, realization hitting: if they could control his fear, they could control the boy\u2019s future.<\/p>\n
