My heart hammered in my chest as I stepped into the hallway with Dr. Brooks. Her voice was low, almost reverent, as she spoke. \u201cThe scan\u2026 it revealed something abnormal. We found a mass, and it\u2019s not small.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA mass?\u201d I echoed, the words heavy in my mouth.<\/p>\n

Dr. Brooks nodded. \u201cWe need to conduct more tests to determine exactly what it is\u2014could be a cyst, could be something else. But it\u2019s vital we act quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The world seemed to tilt on its axis, and my immediate thought was for Emma, still sitting alone in that stark room. \u201cWhat do I tell her?\u201d I asked, my voice breaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe honest,\u201d Dr. Brooks said softly. \u201cShe needs to know that we\u2019re doing everything we can to help her.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pushed back into the room, my heart splitting between fear and resolve. Emma looked up, her face pale and expectant. \u201cWhat did she say?\u201d she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.<\/p>\n

I sat beside her, taking her cold hand in mine. \u201cThey found something, sweetheart. A mass. They\u2019re not sure what it is yet, but they\u2019re going to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n

I squeezed her hand, desperate to infuse her with all the strength I could muster. \u201cWe don\u2019t know yet, but we\u2019re here, and we\u2019re going to face whatever comes next together.\u201d<\/p>\n

The hours that followed were a blur of medical jargon, tests, and waiting. It felt as though time itself had cocooned us in uncertainty. Jason called once, grumbling about how long we were \u201cshoe shopping.\u201d I told him we\u2019d talk later, my mind too occupied with the gravity of our situation to deal with his dismissiveness.<\/p>\n

Finally, Dr. Brooks returned, her demeanor calm yet focused. \u201cWe have a better idea of what we\u2019re dealing with,\u201d she announced. \u201cIt looks like a teratoma\u2014a type of tumor. The good news is that most are benign, but it\u2019s imperative we remove it surgically.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma\u2019s grip on my hand tightened, and I could feel the tremor in her fingers. I turned to her, drawing her into a hug. \u201cWe\u2019ll get through this,\u201d I murmured into her hair. \u201cWe\u2019ll get through it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Surgery was scheduled for the next morning. That night, we stayed in the hospital, the sterile environment oddly comforting in its predictability. Emma slept fitfully, and I kept vigil by her side, whispering reassurances whenever she stirred.<\/p>\n
