Ten years ago, I made a promise to a dying woman.<\/p>\n

Her name was Laura \u2014 warm, gentle, the kind of person who made rooms feel brighter just by walking into them. She had a little girl named Grace, with shy eyes and a laugh that melted my heart from the first day we met.<\/p>\n
Grace\u2019s biological father disappeared the moment Laura told him she was pregnant. No calls. No support. No second thoughts.<\/p>\n
I stepped into the space he abandoned.<\/p>\n

My heart broke in places I didn\u2019t know existed.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one takes you from me,\u201d I said softly. \u201cNot ever.\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when the banging started on the front door.<\/p>\n
Grace froze.
\n\u201cDad\u2026 that\u2019s him.\u201d<\/p>\n
I opened it.<\/p>\n
There he stood \u2014 leather jacket, smug smile, sunglasses at night like a movie villain.<\/p>\n
\u201cMove,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s coming with me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s not your prop,\u201d I snapped.<\/p>\n
He leaned close. \u201cGet in my way again and your little shop disappears by Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n
That was when I smiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrace,\u201d I said calmly, \u201cbring me my phone and the black folder.\u201d<\/p>\n
Inside were screenshots \u2014 every threat, every message about using her for publicity.<\/p>\n
His face went ghost white.<\/p>\n
\u201cI already sent copies to your team manager, journalists, and sponsors,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
He lunged.<\/p>\n
I shoved him back onto the lawn.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou ruined me!\u201d he screamed.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cYou ruined yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stormed off.<\/p>\n
And just like that \u2014 it was over.<\/p>\n
In the weeks that followed, expos\u00e9s destroyed his career.<\/p>\n
One night, while teaching Grace to fix sneakers, she whispered,

I swallowed hard. \u201cAlways.\u201d<\/p>\n
