It was their routine: a quick hug, backpack handed over, and off he\u2019d go. One Friday, however, my husband woke up pale and feverish, so I took Luke instead. When we pulled up to the sitter\u2019s house, Luke unbuckled his seatbelt but didn\u2019t move. He just stared at the front door as if he was waiting for something. I gently asked why he wasn\u2019t going inside, and he looked at me with confusion before saying, \u201cDad always waits.\u201d I asked what he meant, and he pointed toward the porch, explaining that his dad always stayed until he got inside and waved through the window.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1775106\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I felt my chest tighten hearing that. I had always imagined the drop-off as something quick and efficient, but clearly it meant much more to Luke. \u201cOkay,\u201d I told him softly, promising that I would wait. He stepped out of the car and walked slowly toward the door, glancing back at me every few steps. I stayed parked, watching carefully as the sitter opened the door with a smile and welcomed him in. But Luke didn\u2019t go far\u2014he turned around immediately and looked back toward the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>I rolled down the window just as he appeared in the doorway, searching for me. The moment he saw that I was still there, I lifted my hand and waved. His entire face lit up. He pressed his palm against the glass panel beside the door and waved back excitedly, smiling as if he had just won a prize. Only after he disappeared down the hallway did I drive away. Later that evening, when my husband was feeling better, I told him about the moment. He shrugged modestly and said it was nothing, explaining that he simply didn\u2019t want Luke to feel like he had left before Luke was ready.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1955930\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But to me, it wasn\u2019t nothing at all. The following Monday, I insisted on doing drop-off again. I hugged Luke and promised I would stay until he looked back. He nodded seriously, almost like we were making an important agreement. From then on, it became our tradition\u2014whoever dropped him off stayed until he turned around to check. Even years later, when Luke was old enough to walk into school by himself, he would pause at the doors and scan the cars until he found us waiting.
