He\u2019d just gone quiet in that way kids do when they know they won\u2019t be believed, and we\u2019d driven home and had dinner and done homework and watched an episode of whatever cartoon was currently holding his attention, and I\u2019d forgotten about it completely.<\/p>\n
Until two weeks ago\u2014or maybe it was ten days ago, the timeline kept shifting in my memory like sand\u2014when Lucas had mentioned, over breakfast, that Dad\u2019s office door had been closed before sunrise. That he\u2019d gotten up early because he\u2019d had a bad dream, and he\u2019d heard Dad\u2019s voice through the wood, low and sharp and using words Lucas didn\u2019t understand but that \u201cdidn\u2019t sound like bedtime-story Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n
I\u2019d told him that grown-ups talk about grown-up things. Work stress. Business calls. Boring adult stuff that wasn\u2019t anything for a six-year-old to worry about.
