Did not check anything. \u201cIs she okay?\u201d she asked Chloe, not me.
\n\u201cShe\u2019s fine,\u201d Chloe said. \u201cJust being herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

She got me to the car. She drove before I had the seat belt on. She told me not to make a scene at the hospital because she did not have time for this, and I told her I was not trying to make a scene, and she told me that was all I ever did, that every time something important happened for her I suddenly had an issue.I leaned my head back and let those words exist without fighting them because I did not have the breath.<\/p>\n

The ER was bright and crowded when we arrived. A nurse looked up as we came in. Her name tag read Brenda.\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d she asked.Chloe stepped in front of me before I could answer. \u201cShe\u2019s just being dramatic. Probably anxiety.\u201d
\nBrenda looked past Chloe and directly at me. Something shifted in her face.
\n\u201cCan you tell me what you\u2019re feeling?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPain,\u201d I said. \u201cAbdomen. Hard to breathe.\u201dHer posture changed instantly. She reached for a wheelchair.Chloe stepped in front of it.\u201cLet her wait,\u201d she said. Flat. Certain. The voice of someone accustomed to being obeyed. \u201cIt\u2019s not urgent.\u201d
\n\u201cShe doesn\u2019t look stable,\u201d Brenda said.Chloe shrugged. \u201cShe\u2019s jealous. My wedding is in two days. She always does this right before something important.\u201d She leaned slightly, not quite lowering her voice. \u201cTrust me. She\u2019s fine.\u201d
