A boy in my son\u2019s class died on a Friday after suddenly becoming ill at lunch. The school sent one email about the tragedy, and by Monday everything seemed back to normal. Everyone moved on\u2014except the lunch lady, who quietly disappeared from the school.<\/p>\n

Last week, I ran into her at a grocery store. She stopped me and said the boy had told her that morning he felt wrong. Concerned, she texted the principal at 11 a.m., warning him about the child. His only response was to tell her to stay in her lane and keep serving food.<\/p>\n

She showed me the messages on her phone. The timestamps were still there, along with the principal\u2019s dismissive reply. Three days after the boy\u2019s death, she was fired in what the school called a staffing restructure. She wasn\u2019t looking for sympathy or revenge\u2014she only wanted someone to know that the boy had asked for help and that she had tried to act.<\/p>\n
