Sandra was laughing at the laundry mishap of her friend, Janet\u2019s foster son. They were at the Mexican restaurant, where they were dining.
\n\u201cThe things we do for children,\u201d Janet said, \u201cYou and Mark should consider fostering. It\u2019s fulfilling.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sandra sighed, she had doubts about bonding with a foster child. And she felt the pain, as they were not able to have children of their own with her husband, Mark.
\n\u201cIsn\u2019t that Mark over there?\u201d Said Janet, out of nowhere.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe might be here on business. I know he sometimes brings clients here for lunch.\u201d
\n\u201cThere, Sandra, just past the huge chiminea,\u201d Janet pointed.
\nAs she was about to wave at her husband, Mark went to the booth behind them, didn\u2019t noticed his wife.
\n\u201cI\u2019m sorry I kept you waiting, sweetheart,\u201d Mark said to another woman, who was younger than Sandra. She was furious.
\n\u201cI\u2019m not sure that\u2019s a business meeting, sweetie.\u201d Janet said slowly.
\n\u201cDespite twenty years of marriage, her husband was having an\u2026 affair?\u201d Sandra thought, as her eyes got wet.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut maybe I\u2019m wrong,\u201d Janet tried to comfort Sandra. \u201cI mean, I\u2019ve often had to flirt a little with prospective clients to get them to loosen up. Maybe Mark\u2019s doing the same thing.\u201d
\n\u201cNo, I think we both know what\u2019s going on over there, Janet,\u201d Sandra said, \u201cI\u2019m going to go over there, tell him what a jerk he is, and stick this fork right in his\u2014\u201d
\n\u201cWoah!\u201d Janet stopped Sandra. \u201cYou can\u2019t just rush over there and assault him, Sandy. Yes, this looks incredibly shady, but there might still be a reasonable explanation.\u201d
\n\u201cMaybe you\u2019re right,\u201d Sandra said, as she slowed down.
\nThere was a small palm tree between them. They were watching Mark and his female companion who were sitting on the next booth. Mark was sitting close to the woman, his arms were around her.
\n\u201cThere could be an innocent explanation,\u201d Janet said. \u201cMaybe it\u2019s Amy, his boss\u2019s daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe. But if he\u2019s cheating\u2026\u201d Sandra\u2019s heart skipped a beat.
\n\u201cWe\u2019ll get evidence first,\u201d Janet said. \u201cAnd if he is, I\u2019ve got great divorce lawyers.\u201d
\nThey called the waitress, and started to ask questions about Mark and his female companion. \u201cThey\u2019ve been here often,\u201d the waitress said.
\n\u201cAre they always that cozy with each other?\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m sorry, but is there a reason you\u2019re so curious about that table?\u201d
\n\u201cNo, it\u2019s just that I\u2019m sure I\u2019ve seen that man buying clothing for a totally different woman,\u201d Janet intevened. \u201cMy friend and I were just debating whether we should post a picture of him on our socials in case he\u2019s cheating.\u201d
\n\u201cSorry ladies, but management would have a fit if this restaurant was associated with something so scandalous. If I see either of you snapping photos of anything other than the food, I\u2019ll have to alert my manager.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, we certainly wouldn\u2019t want to get into any trouble.\u201d Janet said, \u201cCould you please bring us the bill and box this up to go? We have to leave.\u201d
\nSandra and Janet had a plan for the next day, and when the next day arrived, Sandra decided to follow the plan. She first went to Mark\u2019s office with lunch, and she was frozen, as she saw the same woman she saw with her husband on the restaurant.
\n\u201cSandy!\u201d Mark said, \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d
\n\u201cI brought lunch,\u201d his wife said. \u201cHello, I\u2019m guessing we haven\u2019t met before. I\u2019m Sandra, Mark\u2019s wife.\u201d
\n\u201cYou\u2019re Sandra?\u201d The woman said, and she shook Sandra\u2019s hand. \u201cMark\u2019s told me so much about you. I\u2019m Eliza, Mark\u2019s\u2014\u201d
\n\u201cSecretary!\u201d Mark approached to them. \u201cEliza is my secretary. We were just working on the presentation for this evening\u2019s launch event.\u201d
\n\u201cYou look familiar\u2026 do I know you from somewhere, Eliza?\u201d Sandra asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, Mrs. Baker, I don\u2019t think so. I\u2019ve only been working here for a month.\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m sure you never mentioned that your previous secretary had left!\u201d Sanra looked at her husband.
\n\u201cNina was promoted to work with Mr. Davies after his secretary retired. Eliza here is Nina\u2019s replacement. She\u2019s really great at admin and has a real knack for the creative side of things, too.\u201d
\n\u201cYou should be singing her praises to Davies, not me,\u201d Sandra said, \u201cThese are exquisite,\u201d she said while looking at Eliza\u2019s earrings.
\n\u201cThey were a gift from my fa-father,\u201d the young woman said.
\n\u201cWow, did you bring this all the way down here just for me?\u201d Mark intervened. \u201cThanks for this, honey. But Eliza and I already ate.\u201d
\n\u201cI hope you avoided all the high sodium and sugary foods,\u201d Sandra said to her husband. \u201cAnyway, some hungry interns will appreciate the homemade food.\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019ll take it to the break room and let them know it\u2019s there,\u201d Eliza said, as she took the lunch box.
\n\u201cIs there something you\u2019d like to tell me, Mark?\u201d Sandra asked.
\n\u201cI really don\u2019t know what you\u2019re getting at, honey,\u201d Mark said.
\n\u201cWhat time should I be ready for tonight\u2019s launch?\u201d
\n\u201cOh, uh, are you sure you want to come? It\u2019s not going to be very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you, honey! I\u2019d much rather curl up in front of the TV and catch up on the latest episodes of my favorite series.\u201d
\nSandra left then, as she was sure that her husband was hiding something from her.
\n\u201cYou\u2019re back!\u201d Janet said, as Sandra stepped out from her car in front of her house.
\n\u201cHow did it go?\u201d
\n\u201cThe girl with Mark is his secretary. They looked cozy,\u201d Sandra said.
\n\u201cDon\u2019t ask me how I got this.\u201d Janet said, as she showed to Sandra a receipt for daisy-shaped diamond earrings.
\n\u201cOh my God.\u201d Sandra was shocked. \u201cThis is for the earrings Eliza was wearing! She looked me right in the eye and told me those earrings were from her father!\u201d
\n\u201cThat brazen little witch!\u201d
\n\u201cWe\u2019ll confront him at his presentation tonight,\u201d Sandra continued then as she was shocked.
\n\u201cAre you sure you want to do this at a work function?\u201d Janet asked.
\n\u201cIt seems fitting since he\u2019s banging his secretary!\u201d
\n\u201cHow could he do this to me?\u201d Sandra started to cry. \u201cJanet, tell me the truth: Did I do something to chase Mark away? Or should I have put more effort into my appearance? Maybe if I had Botox or gave the girls a lift.\u201d
\n\u201cIt\u2019s not you, Sandy. It\u2019s him,\u201d Janet said.
\nWhen they arrived at the conference center, Sandra and Janet were dressed in their gowns. \u201cI\u2019ll distract the guard,\u201d Janet said.
\nThen she took their attention, and there was a chance, an opening for Sandra to went inside.
\nShe then started to wait for Mark and Eliza to show up. Then she saw them at the stage, and after their presentation, Eliza put her hand on Mark\u2019s shoulder.
\nThen Sandra approached towards them, and shouted, \u201cYou dirty, cheating rat! How long have you been sleeping with your secretary!?\u201d
\nThen Mark tried to explain her but Sandra thought that everything was clear. During the scene, Mr. Davies had fired Mark, after the investors pulled their money out of their company for the chaos. As people started to leave, Mark took the microphone, and shouted, \u201cShe\u2019s my daughter! Eliza isn\u2019t my mistress, Sandra. She\u2019s my daughter!\u201d
\nSandra was shocked. She turned around, towards Mark and Eliza.
\n\u201cPlease, Sandy,\u201d Mark begged, \u201cIt happened in college. There was a party at the frat house, and there was this girl\u2026 I barely remember anything about it, and I didn\u2019t know about Eliza at all until she showed up at our doorstep six months ago\u2014\u201d
\n\u201cSix months?\u201d Sandra was outraged.
\n\u201cI was in shock. And I was afraid you\u2019d be hurt to find out I had a child with someone else after we tried so hard to have one of our own.\u201d
\n\u201cNo, Mark, you were a coward,\u201d Sandra said after she saw Eliza crying.
\n\u201cWhat you\u2019ve put me through is bad enough, but the way you\u2019ve treated your child is inexcusable.\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m so sorry, Mrs. Baker,\u201d Sandra went towards Eliza. \u201cI never meant to hurt you or give you a reason to think\u2026 to think\u2026I just wanted an opportunity to get to know my father. I never thought it would turn out like this. I begged him to tell you.\u201d
\n\u201cNone of this is your fault, Eliza. You did nothing wrong.\u201d
\n\u201cThere, there,\u201d Sandra tried to sooth Eliza.
\n\u201cThere are no more secrets now, and everything\u2019s going to be okay,\u201d she said.
