\n\u201cMr. Evan, right?\u201d the sheriff asked, and I nodded, trying to keep my face calm. Behind me, the kids were giggling in the living room, unaware of the tension at the door.
\n\u201cI\u2019m here because of the wallet you returned last night,\u201d the sheriff continued.
\nMy thoughts raced. Did the old man think I took something? Was there a misunderstanding? I tried to steady my voice. \u201cIs there a problem?\u201d
\nThe sheriff shook his head, and to my surprise, a small smile appeared on his face. \u201cNo, sir. Not at all. In fact, I\u2019m here to thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
His words took me by surprise. \u201cThank me?\u201d
\n\u201cYes,\u201d he said. \u201cThe gentleman you helped, Mr. Thompson, is quite appreciative. He was really worried about that money. It\u2019s all he lives on. Returning it to him meant a lot.\u201d
\nRelief washed over me, and I finally took a breath. \u201cI just did what I thought was right.\u201d
\nThe sheriff nodded. \u201cHe mentioned you wouldn\u2019t take any reward. That shows real character. We don\u2019t see that every day.\u201d
\nI shrugged, feeling a little embarrassed by the praise. \u201cI\u2019m just trying to teach my kids the right thing.\u201d
\nThe sheriff glanced at the triplets, who were now peeking around the corner, curious about our visitor. \u201cGood lesson,\u201d he said. Then he shifted slightly, pulling something from his pocket.<\/p>\n
\u201cMr. Thompson wanted me to give you this,\u201d the sheriff said, handing me an envelope. \u201cHe insisted.\u201d
\nI hesitated, but the sheriff placed it in my hand gently. \u201cJust open it,\u201d he suggested.
\nWith the kids eagerly watching, I unfolded the envelope. Inside was a handwritten note from Mr. Thompson, thanking me once more for my honesty. There was also a gift card for the local grocery store.
\nI was stunned. \u201cI can\u2019t accept\u2014\u201d I started, but the sheriff raised his hand.

With that, he left, and I stood there in the doorway, feeling a mix of emotions. The kids rushed over, asking what just happened.I crouched down to their level, smiling. \u201cRemember how I always tell you that doing the right thing is important?\u201dThey nodded, eyes wide.\u201cWell, sometimes, it comes back to you in unexpected ways.\u201dThey seemed to understand, and I felt a warmth in my chest.
