My son called me from college one night just to say, \u201cI love you\u201d\u2014something he never did\u2014so I booked a flight without telling him. When his roommate opened the dorm door and saw me, he froze, and inside I found my son surrounded by textbooks, dark circles under his eyes, and quietly falling apart over two failing grades he had hidden from me. When he asked, \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d I simply said, \u201cYou called me.\u201d He put his head in his hands, and instead of lecturing him, I ordered food, sat beside him, and listened. We talked until 2 a.m. about pressure, asking for help, and all the things we had left unsaid for years. I flew home the next morning, and he eventually passed both classes.
