Leila was five and hadnāt slept through the night since her dad left. The nightmares. The crying. The 3 a.m. sobbing fits. It shattered me. Therapists tried to help, but nothing worked. Then one night, Leila crawled onto the couch where Tank had dozed off like a tired old bear. She tucked herself beside him and whispered, āDonāt worry, Iāve got nightmares too.ā Tank didnāt move.
