Democrat presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, has made her share of mistakes during her campaign against former President Donald Trump, but her most recent may be her most devastating.
CNN host Michael Smerconish appeared on the network as a guest on “CNN This Morning,” where he spoke to host Kasie Hunt about why he believes missing the Al Smith Dinner, a Catholic fundraising event that is nonpartisan, was a mistake for the vice president.
“So, I’ve given props to the vice president already because of that Bret Baier interview. Now let me tell you that I think that she blew it by not being there. She should‘ve been there. Humor can be such an effective political tool,” he said before doing the requisite attack on the Republican candidate.
“I thought that Donald Trump misread the room. I thought that he was undisciplined and mostly unfunny. That editing of what you just showed was very sympathetic to Trump because those were his absolute best lines. And in most other instances, he just missed the mark, and it was cringeworthy and it was unnecessarily nasty. He blew an opportunity, as well, to come in, pay respect to the cardinal, be funny, keep it above board. He should have taken a page from Jim Gaffigan. Gaffigan was hysterical and set the right tone for a night like that,” he said.
But many who watched the event of the clips afterward believe that the former president did a fantastic job of being humorous at the event, where he said some zingers for his political opponents.
“It’s a true pleasure to be with you this evening. Amazing pleasure. And these days, it’s really a pleasure anywhere in New York without a subpoena for my appearance,” he said at the start of his remarks, poking fun at himself and his court cases brought by state Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
He went on to say that the vice president sending a video message was “very disrespectful” to the Catholic community before warning her about history.“The last Democrat not to attend this important event was Walter Mondale, and it did not go very well for him. He lost 49 states and he won one, Minnesota,” he cautioned before roasting her again.
“But if you really wanted Vice President Harris to accept your invitation, I guess you should have told her the funds were going to bail out the looters and rioters in Minneapolis, and she would have been here. Guaranteed, she would have been here. Guaranteed. She would have been okay,” the former president said.
“Right now we have someone in the White House who can barely talk, barely put together two coherent sentences, who seems to have mental faculties of a child. It’s sad. There’s a person that has nothing going, no intelligence whatsoever, but enough about Kamala Harris,” he said.
