I Refuse to Spend My Inheritance on My Stepchildren

Money sometimes causes conflict in relationships, particularly when one spouse feels entitled to a specified amount. Becky, for example, thought that the wealth her father gave her should be spent on herself rather than on family needs.

Her husband objected, telling her that he’s been there for her for years. In an unexpected twist, he did something that wounded Becky, prompting her to seek our guidance.

Here is Becky’s letter:

I’ve been a housewife, taking care of my 2 stepkids while my husband provided for us. Recently, my dad left me a $40k inheritance, and my husband said it would help with the family expenses. I told him, “My dad left this money for me, to spend on myself!”

He nodded. Next day, I was horrified to find that my closet was empty of my favorite clothes. Most of my bags and shoes were gone. I went to the living room, where my husband was, and saw my things packed in boxes.

He said, “I thought marriage was about supporting each other, but clearly, you don’t believe in that!”

Then, with a smirk, he added, “Now that you have your dad’s money, maybe you can spend it on buying your own stuff.”

I couldn’t believe my eyes! It’s been a few days, and my husband and I have completely stopped talking to each other. Was I wrong for what I said?
