Family Stories That Show Teenagers Need More Attention Than Babies

Many parents say it’s hard only when kids are babies, and it gets easier as they grow. This is partly true: they become more independent, and parents get more time for themselves. But as kids grow, new challenges come up, like teenage rebellion. Parents need to accept that their child is now their own person, not just a kid anymore.

The Story:
My 18-year-old daughter is friends with a 20-year-old guy. They are just friends. They met on social media because they like the same things. She tells me, “Dad, do you think I’m stupid? Dan and I are just friends.” Yesterday, she went to his birthday party and stayed overnight. He lives in the city, and we live in the village. I don’t mind; I know his address and have his and his parents’ phone numbers.

In the evening, I got a call from his mom: “Mr. Matthews, don’t worry. Thank you for trusting our son! Lena will sleep on the sofa in the living room, so don’t worry.” I thanked her, but I thought to myself—the only person I trust here is my daughter.

I CAME TO CLEAN THE HOME OF A HERMIT WOMAN & FOUND BIRTHDAY CARDS THAT REVEALED HER SAD STORY. My husband and I have been doing deep cleaning jobs for years, so when I got a call from a woman named Margaret asking me to clean her neighbor’s house, I didn’t think much of it. She told me Eleanor had become a recluse—her once-beautiful garden was overgrown, her house reeked. I felt for her and agreed to help. When I arrived, the place looked abandoned. After knocking several times, the door cracked open, revealing a frail, exhausted woman. She insisted she didn’t need help, but I wasn’t leaving. The words that finally got through to her were, “This will be your fresh start.” While she stayed at Margaret’s, my husband and I got to work. Filthy dishes, mold, piles of junk. But then I found one room—untouched, covered in dust, frozen in time. A child’s room. Buried in the clutter, I found a stack of birthday cards. The last one read: would’ve been 13 today. A chill ran through me. I had to talk to Eleanor immediately. Here’s my full story:
