I Refuse to Go to My Best Friend’s Wedding Because of Her Fiancé

My best friend is remarrying her ex-husband. Their first marriage ended in a rough divorce five years ago. I was there through it all-the arguments, the belittling, and the heartbreak. I was proud of my friend for walking away from that toxic relationship.

A few months ago, she revealed they’d reconnected, gone to therapy, and decided to get married again. She even asked me to be her maid of honor. I tried to keep an open mind and met with her ex, but he brushed me off with dismissive comments about how I had “always meddled” in their relationship. Things came to a head at an engagement dinner. When I told them how I felt, my friend’s ex laughed loudly saying “Whether you come to the wedding or not won’t make a difference,” mocking me.

My friend just sat there, clearly uncomfortable but saying nothing. Later, I told her I couldn’t support this marriage. I love her and want her to be happy, but I can’t celebrate a relationship with someone who treated her and me with such disrespect. She was devastated, saying my refusal felt like I was abandoning her after a decade of friendship.

Was I wrong?
