Trump asserts that Zelenskyy is expected to participate in peace negotiations with Putin.

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had written to him, expressing his willingness to engage in negotiations regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“Ukraine is prepared to begin negotiations as soon as possible in order to move closer to a permanent peace agreement. In a speech to Congress on Tuesday, Trump quoted the letter and stated, “Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians.”

Trump also claimed to have “received strong signals that they are ready for peace” and to have had “serious discussions with Russia.”

He remarked, “Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” “This madness needs to end. Time to stop the murders. This pointless war needs to end. You must speak with both sides if you wish to put an end to wars.

In his speech to Congress, Trump was supposed to go into further detail about his plans for Russia and Ukraine, but he did not provide any additional information about how he intends to resolve the largest conflict in Europe since World War Two.

Trump claimed that Ukraine was prepared to sign a minerals agreement with the United States, which Washington claims is essential to ensuring that the United States continues to support Ukraine’s defense.

According to four sources who spoke to Reuters, Ukraine and the Trump administration intend to sign the agreement in exchange for military assistance, which Trump has delayed. “There is no signing planned,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News later on Tuesday, a Fox reporter wrote on X.

Trump did not elaborate on the minerals deal, so it is unclear what will happen to it.

Following what he called a “regrettable” Oval Office altercation with Trump last week, Zelenskiy promised early Tuesday to mend ties with the United States.

During a visit to Washington following the dispute with Trump in the Oval Office, Zelenskiy stated that he was prepared to sign the minerals deal “any time and in any convenient format” and that he wanted to “make things right.”

His remarks were made the day after Trump suspended military assistance to Ukraine, his most recent attempt to reverse U.S. policy and take a more accommodative approach to Russia.

“My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts,” Zelenskiy said in his X statement. The halt in U.S. military supplies was not mentioned in the statement.

Zelenskiy’s remarks were obviously intended to emphasize Kyiv’s appreciation after the explosive White House altercation, in which Trump and Vice President JD Vance chastised Zelenskiy for not being more grateful.

“We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence,” Zelenskiy wrote in a letter. “Things did not go as planned at our meeting in Washington. That it transpired in this manner is unfortunate.

Now is the moment to put things right.

Zelenskiy laid out a roadmap for a peace deal, saying that if Russia followed suit, it could start with the release of prisoners and an end to air and sea attacks.

“Then we want to move very fast through all next stages and to work with the U.S. to agree a strong final deal.”

A CHANGE IN GEOPOLOGY

Ukraine’s forces could compete with Russian troops on the battlefield, according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, but Kyiv would make every effort to maintain its cooperation with the United States.

“We will continue to work with the U.S. through all available channels in a calm manner,” Shmyhal stated. “We only have one plan – to win and to survive.”

While awaiting confirmation of Trump’s action, the Kremlin in Moscow stated that stopping U.S. military assistance to Ukraine was the best course of action for achieving peace.

U.S. Democrats have expressed outrage over Trump’s sudden shift toward Russia, which is the most significant change in Washington’s geopolitical landscape in decades. Since the 1940s, governments of both parties have placed a high priority on protecting Europe from an adversarial Moscow.

PRESSURE IN EUROPE

American military assistance has been halted, which increases pressure on European allies who have openly supported Zelenskiy since the Oval Office scandal. The leaders of France and Britain, who both paid a visit to the White House last week, have offered to send troops to help protect a possible ceasefire.

Conservatives and Social Democrats in Germany unveiled plans Tuesday to establish a 500 billion euro ($531 billion) fund to aid in increasing defense spending.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, presented plans to raise up to 800 billion euros for defense expenditures in the EU. On Thursday, the 27-nation bloc will hold an emergency summit.

The office of French President Emmanuel Macron reported that the president had met with Ukrainian and American leaders and praised Zelenskiy’s desire to get back in touch with Trump.

However, Trump’s decision to halt military supplies drew harsh criticism from French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou.

“Suspending aid to a country under attack during a war means abandoning the country under attack and accepting or hoping that the aggressor will win,” he stated in a question in parliament.

Many Ukrainians called Washington’s action a betrayal, and many were shocked. The head of the foreign affairs committee of the Ukrainian parliament, Oleksandr Merezhko, stated that it appeared that Trump was “pushing us towards capitulation”.

Olena Bilova, 47, a lawyer in Kyiv, stated, “Yes, it is betrayal, let’s call it what it is.” “But let’s hope that American civil society and the elites of the European Union will not leave us alone.”
