There’s nothing quite like starting the day with a warm cup of coffee. It’s my morning ritual! However, when evening rolls around, I typically switch to tea.
You know the routine: you fill the kettle, and before you know it, you have a steaming cup ready to go — after adding your favorite tea bag, of course.
A few minutes later, you remove the bag, toss it aside, and enjoy your drink.
But ever since my grandmother shared some clever uses for old tea bags, I’ve stopped throwing them away.
Keep reading to discover these smart ideas for repurposing used tea bags. You might be amazed at how useful they can be — and you could even save some money down the line!
1. Soothe sunburns.
Grab a tea bag filled with black tea and give it a rinse under cold water. This simple remedy will become your go-to solution for sunburns, whether you’re enjoying summer days or exploring new places. The tannic acid in black tea aids in skin recovery and provides a refreshing cooling effect.

2. Relieve minor burns.
You can repurpose the tea bags you use for sunburn relief in other urgent situations as well. If you happen to burn yourself, simply place a tea bag on the burned area. The tannins found in black tea can help calm minor burns.

3. Get rid of warts.
Did you know that green tea is packed with antioxidants that can help stop warts from developing? Simply take a used tea bag once it has cooled and place it directly on the wart.
After 15 minutes, take off the tea bag and switch it out for a fresh one. Keep the new tea bag on for another 15 minutes. After a few days, you should notice that your wart will start to disappear.
4. Put an end to puffy eyes.
The tannins in black tea can be beneficial for reducing puffiness around your eyes.
Next time you enjoy a cup of tea, don’t toss the teabag! Instead, store it in a small container and pop it in the fridge for a day or two. When you’re ready to tackle those under-eye bags, just take out a couple of chilled tea bags from the refrigerator.

5. Remove grease stains.
Are you letting your dishes soak due to tough stains?
Simply fill your sink with water and add your dirty dishes. Toss in a few tea bags, and you’ll find that the stains come off much more easily.

6. Weed killer.
A bag of tea can be transformed into an effective weed killer.
You can try using brewed black tea directly on the weeds, or create a mixture using citrus (like orange or grapefruit), tea, and water. Additionally, steeping black tea in a jar of vinegar with orange peels can serve as a spray, as suggested by Tip Hero.
7. Fertilizer.
You can use tea bags as fertilizer in your compost bin, and you can also bury loose leaf teas and compostable tea bags around your plants. Roses thrive on this, and houseplants as well as garden plants like ferns benefit from it too. By digging in the tea bags or loose leaves near the roots, you can directly support plant growth.
