My sister put me at the singles’ table to humiliate me at her wedding. She

He confidently strode to the center of the crowd, catching everyone’s attention. A hush fell over the room as Richard, slightly confused but playing along, tossed the garter into the air. With a swift, practiced motion, William caught it effortlessly. Cheers erupted, mingled with murmurs of surprise and intrigue.

I watched as William turned towards me, crossing the floor with a determined air. My heart pounded in my chest as he approached, each step punctuating the dramatic shift in the evening’s narrative. He knelt before me, garter in hand, and slipped it onto my hand instead of my leg, with a mischievous grin. The room gasped collectively, and I could feel Lydia’s eyes burning holes into my back. Her day was meant to be a triumph over me, yet here I was, the center of attention in the most unexpected way.

‘Would you do me the honor of joining me for the next dance?’ William asked, his voice loud enough to be heard by the surrounding tables.

I nodded, unable to find my voice, caught between disbelief and exhilaration. As we made our way back to the dance floor, the guests parted like the Red Sea, whispering about the supposed relationship between William and me. It was juicy gossip, a delicious twist no one saw coming.

Under the spotlight, we waltzed, William leading with confidence and grace. The band played a romantic melody, and as we twirled, I caught sight of Lydia. Her face was a mix of disbelief and simmering anger, her earlier triumph unraveling with each turn we took. For the first time that day, I felt like I had the upper hand.

‘Why are you doing this?’ I asked William as we danced, genuinely curious.

He chuckled, a low sound that resonated through me. ‘You seem like a good person who needed a little help. And, well, I couldn’t resist ruffling a few feathers. Your sister’s quite the character.’

‘You have no idea,’ I replied, feeling lighter than I had all day.

As the song ended, William dipped me dramatically, earning another burst of applause. We righted ourselves, both breathless and smiling, the intensity of the moment lingering in the air between us.

Lydia approached us again, her facade of joy cracking under the strain. ‘Well, this is… unexpected,’ she managed, her voice tight.

‘Life’s full of surprises,’ William replied smoothly, his arm around my waist, reinforcing the illusion that we were more than just strangers brought together by circumstance.

As the evening wore on, Lydia tried to regain control of the narrative, but the damage was done. The guests were enchanted by the story of William and me, and no amount of her charm could recapture the spotlight.

For once, I wasn’t the pitiable sister at the singles’ table. I was the woman whose presence rivaled the bride’s on her own wedding day, thanks to the intervention of a handsome stranger with a penchant for mischief and a knack for timing.

As the night drew to a close, I knew this would be a story retold at family gatherings, a tale where Lydia’s perfect day had been perfectly overshadowed. And in the midst of it all, I had found an unexpected ally, maybe even a friend, in William.
