She screamed at my daughter for breaking a cup, then locked her barefoot on the

as he cradled Lily in his arms, desperately trying to warm her icy body. His heart raced as he whispered, “Stay with me, sweetheart. Please, stay with me.”
The operator’s voice crackled on the line, calm and composed amidst his panic. “911, what is your emergency?”
“My daughter,” Alan stammered, “she’s been locked outside in the cold… please, send an ambulance, she’s not responding!”
“Help is on the way, sir. Can you tell me her age and condition?” the operator asked, trying to glean as much information as possible.
“She’s five,” Alan replied, his voice thick with fear. “She’s so cold, and she’s not waking up.”

“Alright, sir, I need you to stay calm. Make sure she’s inside and out of the cold. Remove any wet clothing and cover her with warm blankets or your own body heat. Do you have any warm drinks nearby?”
Alan glanced around the room, spotting his thermos. “I have some coffee,” he said, realizing it might be their only option.
“That’s good. In small sips, let her have some just to get some warmth back into her body. The ambulance is on its way.”
Alan followed the instructions, gently wrapping Lily in a blanket, holding her close, his breath brushing against her cheek in a desperate attempt to share his warmth. He could feel the warmth slowly returning to her body, but her eyes remained closed, a silent plea for help.

Vanessa finally rose from the couch, her expression shifting from confusion to shock as she took in the scene. “What happened?” she asked, her voice a mixture of disbelief and fear.
“What did you do?” Alan’s voice was low, simmering with anger as he held his daughter close. “She could have died out there, Vanessa.”
Vanessa’s eyes darted between Alan and Lily, realization dawning on her like a cold wave crashing over her. “I didn’t think—”
“No, you didn’t,” Alan snapped, his voice strained. “You didn’t think at all.”

The sound of sirens echoed in the distance, signaling the arrival of help. Alan kept his focus on Lily, silently praying for her to open her eyes, for some sign that she was still with him.
Moments later, paramedics rushed into the apartment, taking over with practiced efficiency. Alan watched, his heart pounding, as they checked her vitals and worked to warm her up further.
“She’s going to be okay,” one of the paramedics assured him, a small measure of hope in her voice. “She’ll need to be checked at the hospital, but she’s a strong little girl.”

Alan nodded, relief washing over him like a tide as he followed them to the ambulance, never letting go of Lily’s hand. Vanessa stood back, her face pale, guilt etched into her features as she watched them go.
In the back of the ambulance, Alan held Lily close, her hand still clutched tightly in his. She stirred slightly, her eyes fluttering open, a fragile smile touching her lips as she whispered, “Daddy?”
“I’m here, sweetheart,” Alan said softly, tears of relief glistening in his eyes. “I’m right here.”
As the ambulance raced towards the hospital, Alan vowed that he would never let anything like this happen again. Lily was his world, and he would do whatever it took to keep her safe.
