THE LINE THAT ENDED TWO FAMILIES

The conference room became so quiet that no one dared to move. Marcus stared at the security footage playing on the screen while his younger brother, Nathan, stood frozen near the doorway. Angela covered her mouth, her tears no longer enough to hide the truth.

At that moment, my attorney entered carrying the sealed DNA results from the court-approved laboratory. Marcus grabbed the envelope before anyone else could touch it. His confidence lasted only a few seconds.

As he unfolded the report, his eyes stopped on one sentence near the bottom of the page. His face turned ghostly white, and the papers slipped from his trembling hands.

I picked up the report and read the line aloud. “Tested individual is excluded as the biological father. Probability of paternity: 0.00%.” No one in the room could even breathe-
