The defense went better than I had ever imagined. Every question from the committee was answered with confidence, and after nearly two hours, they unanimously approved my dissertation with the highest honors. The room burst into applause as I officially became Dr. Selena Carter.

Just as the congratulations began, the auditorium doors opened and my father walked inside. After hearing my late-night voicemail, he had driven through the night to be there. When he saw Hunter and Barbara standing near the back, he calmly addressed the room and revealed exactly what they had done only hours earlier.
