I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the scene unfolding below me. My heart was pounding so loudly that I feared they might hear it. Caleb was involved in something unimaginable, something that made my sister’s warning all too real.Quietly, I shifted to get a better view through the floorboards. Caleb and the stranger were speaking in hushed tones, their words almost lost in the rain tapping against the roof.
“Are the arrangements in place?” Caleb asked, his voice steady and devoid of any hint of the man I thought I knew.
The stranger nodded, glancing around as if sensing my presence. “Everything is set. We leave at dawn.”
Leave? Where were they planning to go with these passports, and why were they assuming my identity as well?
I clutched my phone tightly, though it was useless now with Mara’s call disconnected. I needed to warn her, to ask what this was all about. But for now, all I could do was wait and listen. The stranger continued, “Is she suspicious?”
Caleb shrugged. “Not yet. But we need to stick to the plan. The fewer questions she asks, the better.”
A chill ran down my spine. This was about me. I needed to know why, but confronting them now would be too dangerous. I had to think carefully about my next move.Minutes passed, feeling like hours, as they discussed details I couldn’t quite make out. But one thing was clear: they were planning something big, and I was unknowingly a part of it.
Finally, Caleb and the stranger moved towards the door, taking the passports with them. I held my breath, praying they wouldn’t come upstairs. The attic was dark, and the shadows were my only allies.
As their voices faded into the distance, I exhaled slowly, trying to calm my racing mind. I needed to contact Mara again. She might have answers, or at least a plan to keep us safe.I waited, counting to a hundred after I heard the front door close. Then, slowly, quietly, I made my way back down the attic stairs, careful to avoid making any noise. My heart was still pounding in my chest, a relentless reminder of the danger lurking in my own home.Once downstairs, I grabbed my phone and turned it back on. The screen flickered to life, and I immediately dialed Mara’s number. It rang, and rang, before going to voicemail. I didn’t dare leave a message.Pacing the living room, I tried to piece together what little I knew. Caleb, my husband, was involved in something secretive and potentially dangerous. The stranger seemed to know him well, and they had plans that involved me and Noah. I needed Mara’s help to figure out what to do next.
As the night wore on, I could hear every creak of the house, every rustle of the wind outside. My mind raced with possibilities, none of them good. I couldn’t stay here, not with Caleb mixed up in this. But where could I go? Who could I trust?
Just then, my phone buzzed with a message from Mara: “Stay safe. I’m on my way.”
Relief washed over me, but uncertainty lingered. What would happen when Mara arrived? How deeply was Caleb involved in whatever was happening? And most importantly, how could I protect my family from this unfolding nightmare?
The answers wouldn’t come tonight, but I knew one thing for sure: this was far from over.
