I started typing, my fingers moving with a determination I hadn’t felt in a long time. The words flowed easily, a reflection of the clarity that had settled in my mind since the trip.“Mom, you made it clear you didn’t want Maisie and me around when you told us to skip your birthday. I respected your wishes. Spending Thanksgiving away wasn’t planned to hurt you; it was a chance to be with people who welcomed us.I’m grateful for the experience, and for the first time in a long while, I felt truly at peace. I won’t apologize for finding joy and warmth elsewhere when it wasn’t offered by family. Please understand that this isn’t about money or luxury; it’s about respect and kindness—something I hope we can all practice more of moving forward.”

I read the message twice. It was firm but honest, a reflection of how I felt, and hit send before I could overthink it. It was time to stop playing the role of the ‘fixer’ and start focusing on what was best for Maisie and me.
A wave of relief washed over me, and I took a deep breath. The silence that followed was heavy but honest. For the first time, I felt like I was speaking up for myself and Maisie, prioritizing our happiness over expectations.
Later that evening, Vanessa called. “How are you holding up?” she asked, her voice warm and understanding.

“I’m okay. I finally said what I needed to say,” I replied, feeling lighter just by admitting it out loud.
Maisie cooed from her play mat, and I found myself smiling. It was a small reminder that I was building a life for us—a life that could be full of warmth and acceptance, even if it was different from what I’d imagined.
“I’m proud of you, Jenna,” Vanessa said. “You deserve to be around people who appreciate you and Maisie for who you are.”
“I know,” I replied, feeling the truth of her words seep into my bones. “I really do.”

As I sat there, watching Maisie play, I realized that my path might be different from the one I’d imagined, but it was mine. And it was leading somewhere beautiful.
For the first time in a while, I felt hopeful about the future. Maisie’s giggles filled the room, and I knew that as long as I had her—and friends like Vanessa—I’d be okay.
There’s more to come in this journey, and I’m ready to embrace it, one step at a time.
